About The Position

Our client, a hospital, is seeking to add a NEW Occupational & Employee Health Nurse Practitioner to their team. The Occupational & Employee Health Nurse Practitioner is responsible for playing a critical role in supporting employee health by delivering comprehensive employee health services for the hospital, including pre-employment medical clearance screenings, administering required immunizations, managing work related injuries and exposures, evaluating return to work clearance, and other periodic OEH evaluations. The OEH NP also participates in and can lead OEH programs and projects, such as annual flu vaccination and fit testing campaigns. The Nurse Practitioner independently manages clinical decision-making, coordinates referrals and follow-ups, and partners with departments across the organization. This position is essential to maintaining a healthy workforce, and functions under limited supervision within the broader strategic goals of the occupational and employee health service.

Requirements

  • Completion of an accredited educational program for nurse practitioners and at least two years of current clinical experience in adult practice required
  • Prior experience in Occupational and Employee Health.
  • Current license to practice as a registered nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts with authorization by the Board of Registration in Nursing to practice in an expanded role.
  • Registered with the ANCC or other accrediting organization for Nurse Practitioners.
  • Registered with the State of Massachusetts and DEA for prescription writing privileges.
  • Current BLS Certification
  • Expert knowledge of clinical decision-making frameworks and ability to apply them independently in an occupational health setting, without routine on-site supervision.
  • Skill in analyzing clinical information and applying structured problem-solving methods
  • Ability to communicate clearly and accurately in both verbal and written English
  • Knowledge of adult learning principles and the ability to develop and deliver tailored patient and employee education.
  • Skill in organizing and managing clinical workflows
  • Ability to collaborate across clinical and non-clinical departments
  • Proficiency in using electronic health records (EHRs) and occupational health software platforms to input, retrieve, and analyze health data

Responsibilities

  • Conduct pre-employment screenings, diagnose and treat work-related injuries and exposures, conduct return to work evaluations, perform professional physical exams (as required for specific job types), order and interpret diagnostics, and develop treatment and work status plans with minimal supervision, in alignment with evidence-based protocols and regulatory standards.
  • Manage work-related injuries and exposures, including arranging specialist referrals, monitoring recovery progress, and ensuring timely follow-up and communications with relevant stakeholders.
  • Maintain thorough documentation in the electronic medical record and communicate work restrictions and care plans to supervisors and Absence Management.
  • Provide health promotion and disease prevention counseling to employees. Educate patients on workplace safety, exposure prevention, immunizations, and other topics relevant to OEH.
  • Collect and review data on workplaces injuries/exposures and safety hazards to identify targets for intervention to improve safety and prevent future injury/exposure.
  • Act as the primary clinical resource for OEH matters across the hospital. Collaborate with Human Resources, Environmental Health & Safety, Infection Control, and managers to support compliance with health policies and regulatory standards.
  • Create and conduct a periodic review of clinical protocols, standing orders, and documentation standards to ensure high-quality, legally compliant care.
  • Participate in departmental quality improvement efforts by tracking clinical outcomes, identifying trends in employee health, and implementing improvements. Use data and current research to inform practice and policy.
  • Maintain current knowledge of occupational health regulations and best practices. Participate in continuing education and serve as a mentor or educator to clinical staff as needed. Represent the department on committees and in cross-functional initiatives.
