Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Graduate of an accredited school of Surgical Technology program.
  • Must be registered with the Virginia Board of Medicine as a Surgical Technologist in accordance with Virginia Code §54.1-2956.12.
  • Must hold and maintain a national surgical technologist certification (e.g., NBSTSA CST) or meet another Virginia Board-approved pathway (military training, DOL-registered apprenticeship, or applicable grandfathering criteria).
  • Must provide proof of compliance prior to hire and maintain active registration throughout employment.
  • Ability to create and maintain a sterile field.
  • Knowledge of specialized instrumentation and equipment for various surgical procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure materials.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in writing, oral or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Basic understanding of medical terminology.
  • Computer skills.

Responsibilities

  • Provides technical support to the obstetrician/surgeon and registered nurse in the operating and delivery room settings.
  • Assists in the preparation of supplies and equipment for surgical and delivery procedures.
  • Provides the appropriate instrumentation necessary for the obstetrician/surgeon to perform these procedures.
  • Maintains current knowledge of trends in the operating room, including new products, procedures, and physicians’ techniques.
  • Provides assistance in the maintenance of aseptic cleaning of the Operating Room pre and post procedure.
  • Maintains a par level of supplies within the department.
  • Performs indirect and direct patient care of the neonate, and female patients under the direct supervision of a RN.
  • Provides patient care support, maintenance of nursing unit, housekeeping and dietary tasks, and clerical support for the nursing unit.
  • Collaborates with the leadership team to identify and resolve unit issues.
  • Keeps co-workers and intra-op staff informed of any updates/issues.
  • Follows written instructions as needed.
  • Collects, organizes, and enters information into the patient scheduling application.
  • Assists with various types of surgical operations providing technically skilled duties, serving as first assist.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of instrumentation and sterile/aseptic technique.
  • May be asked to perform additional duties as assigned.
