About The Position

Under the supervision of a registered nurse, the OB Patient Care/Scrub Tech performs various tasks to assist in the care and comfort of patients in the Family Maternity Unit. This role involves reporting and recording observations, contributing to the efficient functioning of the unit, and adhering to established policies and procedures. A key responsibility includes performing "scrub" technologist duties for cesarean sections and assisting with OB-related surgical procedures, requiring knowledge of sterile technique and sterilization procedures.

Requirements

  • Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) certification, or Minimum of two (2) years of relevant work experience performing the essential responsibilities of the nursing assistant role.
  • High-school graduate diploma or GED required.
  • Maintains current CPR certification.
  • Successful completion of Nursing Team On-boarding, unit based orientation (including OR technician training program) and clinical competency validation within 60 days of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Performs and documents nursing care measures to meet the physical needs of patients as directed by the registered nurse, including hygiene, comfort, activity, nutrition, and elimination.
  • Performs and documents monitoring procedures, observes and reports patient responses, vital signs, weight, drainage, and blood glucose.
  • Performs therapeutic measures/procedures, observes and reports changes, deviations from normal, including application of heat/cold, therapeutic baths, specimen collection, assisting with procedures, oxygen therapy, applying non-sterile dressings, discontinuing peripheral IVs, oral pharyngeal suctioning, and telemetry patch application.
  • Maintains safety and security of patients, families, self, and others by following safety precautions, standard precautions, reporting equipment malfunctions, assisting in maintaining a clean environment, using proper body mechanics, positioning patients, applying restraints as directed, interacting courteously, explaining procedures, and assuring patient privacy/rights/confidentiality.
  • Promotes efficient and effective functioning of the unit/hospital by utilizing computer messaging, completing inventory management, complying with policies, using designated communication lines, supporting cost reduction efforts, using time and resources effectively, maintaining cleanliness, cooperating with the healthcare team, and handling floor stock medications.
  • Performs additional unit-specific tasks and care elements for which they have received specific instruction and demonstrated competence.
  • Performs duties in the capacity of a "scrub" technologist as prescribed by hospital policies and procedures, including room setup, checking equipment, assisting with supplies, basic knowledge of instrumentation and surgical procedures, organizing sterile fields, anticipating instrumentation sequence, identifying medications, tracking sponges/needles/instruments, relaying specimen identification, and organizing end-of-case cleanup.
  • Assists in maintaining a safe environment for patients and staff by applying principles of aseptic practice, checking sterile supplies, recognizing and reporting breaks in sterile technique, requesting assistance from Sterile Processing, following universal precautions, and preventing loss of instruments.
  • Assists in the orderly function of the OR by demonstrating flexibility, checking and putting away excess supplies, seeking opportunities to update surgical skills, checking to-follow cases, assisting in orientation of new personnel, participating in team efforts, updating surgeon's preference lists, reporting on time, understanding disaster plans, and following hospital/unit policies.
  • Initiates appropriate intraoperative behaviors unique to first assistant, if trained, including providing hemostasis, providing exposure of the operative site, using surgical instrumentation skillfully, and handling tissue appropriately.
  • Performs other related work as required or requested.
