The Obstetrical Surgical Technician is an integral member of the Obstetrical healthcare team, providing technical support to obstetricians/surgeons and registered nurses in operating and delivery room settings. This role involves assisting with the preparation of supplies and equipment for surgical and delivery procedures, ensuring the availability of appropriate instrumentation. The OB Surgical Tech is also responsible for staying updated on operating room trends, including new products, procedures, and physician techniques. Key duties include maintaining aseptic cleaning of the Operating Room pre and post procedure, managing supply levels in the Family Birth Center, performing indirect and direct patient care for neonates and female patients under RN supervision, and providing general patient care support, unit maintenance, housekeeping, dietary tasks, and clerical support for the nursing unit.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Current Surgical Tech Certification required, or if employed prior to July 1, 2021, registration with the Virginia Board of Medicine required.
  • Ability to create and maintain a sterile field.
  • Knowledge of specialized instrumentation and equipment for various surgical procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure materials.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in writing, oral or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Basic understanding of medical terminology.
  • Computer skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Graduate of an approved Operating Room Technician program.
  • 3 years of Surgical Scrub Tech experience.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support to the obstetrician/surgeon and registered nurse in the operating and delivery room settings.
  • Assist in the preparation of supplies and equipment for surgical and delivery procedures.
  • Provide the appropriate instrumentation necessary for the obstetrician/surgeon to perform procedures.
  • Maintain current knowledge of trends in the operating room, including new products, procedures, and physicians’ techniques.
  • Provide assistance in the maintenance of aseptic cleaning of the Operating Room pre and post procedure.
  • Maintain a par level of supplies within the Family Birth Center.
  • Perform indirect and direct patient care of the neonate and female patients under the direct supervision of a RN.
  • Provide patient care support, maintenance of nursing unit, housekeeping and dietary tasks, and clerical support for the nursing unit.
  • Collaborate with the leadership team and UCIC to identify and resolve unit issues.
  • Keep co-workers and intra-op staff informed of any updates/issues.
  • Follow written instructions as needed.
  • Collect, organize, and enter information into the patient scheduling application.
  • Assist with various types of surgical operations providing technically skilled duties, serving as first assist.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of instrumentation and sterile/aseptic technique.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
