This position is located in Bremerton, Washington. Overhaul and Repair Engineering (O&RE) is a large organization that supports the top U.S. Navy priority of fleet readiness by accomplishing overhaul, repair, and modernization work on active duty SEAWOLF, VIRGINIA, OHIO, and LOS ANGELES class submarines. The organization is involved with all aspects of a project starting with planning and development of technical work documents through supporting final system test and ship certification at Electric Boat’s shipyard and various off-site U.S. Navy shipyards and facilities. Frequent opportunities exist to travel to other submarine repair facilities in support of Electric Boat contracted fleet maintenance work. Overhaul and Repair Engineering is cognizant of almost all systems and components on a submarine, functioning as a dynamic multi-discipline team involving electrical systems, mechanical/piping systems, and structural components. In order to accomplish its mission, the U.S. Navy needs to minimize the time submarines spend in the shipyard being repaired which requires work to be performed in shifts to maximize progress made each day. This posting is focused on applicants seeking to provide real-time creative, technical leadership and problem resolution to skilled trades working the afternoon / evening shift, directly impacting the submarine’s ability to return to sea. This includes guidance on navigating unforeseen shipboard conditions; tailoring work procedures to meet unique configurations; and accounting for the realities of fabrication, manufacturing, installation, and testing of shipboard systems and equipment. Common Electrical Systems include: Non-propulsion electronic systems, including fly-by-wire ship control, weapons launch control, navigation, sonar, instrumentation and indications; Power distribution, electrical methods, electrical hull penetrators, and electromechanical actuation; Voice communications, interior communication circuits, and fiber-optic data distribution. Common Mechanical/Piping Systems include: Valves, actuators, main condensers/heat exchangers, pipe and machinery fabrication and welding; Weapons and countermeasure launching, steering and diving, hatch operability, masts and antennas, shaft and propulsion, hydraulics, and compressed air. Common Structural Components include: Pressure hull boundary and non-pressure hull boundary ship structures; Structure fabrication and welding; Submarine coating and cathodic protection; Non-metallic coverings and treatments. O&RE operates in a collaborative and fast paced manner to ensure safety, stealth, maneuverability, and habitability of a submarine are maintained to the highest level. Engineers interface consistently with other Electric Boat departments including scheduling, quality assurance, material sourcing, contracts, cost engineering, system testing, operations skilled trades, and project management as well as U.S. Navy submariners. On the job training as well as training under more experienced engineers or subject matter experts will be provided. This job will be electrical driven in work scope.
