Requirements

  • NYS Certified Science Teacher
  • Bachelor's degree
  • At least two years of experience teaching in an urban high school setting
  • New York State certification, Gr 7-12
  • New York State Department of Education Fingerprint clearance

Responsibilities

  • Serve as an Advisor to 12-15 students for their entire high school career, taking ownership of their academic, behavioral, and overall success.
  • Ensure advisees are in attendance, punctual, excelling in classes, and seeking support.
  • Create an advisory period that acts as a home base for each student.
  • Act as the academic expert on each advisee and the liaison between the student, family, and school teams.
  • Teach the advisory curriculum for their advisees' grade.
  • Accompany advisees on educational field trips.
  • Contact advisee families a minimum of seven times a year and respond within 24 hours to all communications.
  • Develop and oversee Individual Student Support Plans twice a year for each advisee.
  • Facilitate discipline-related required meetings on behalf of advisees.
  • Prepare rigorous, student-centered lesson plans that engage and motivate students.
  • Plan standards-based units of study with clear outcomes.
  • Provide meaningful feedback on student work to assess progress and suggest improvements.
  • Proactively seek new ways to promote student learning.
  • Create thoughtful, standards-based assessments.
  • Collaborate with school leaders and colleagues, using data to drive instruction and raise student achievement.
  • Intervene with improvement plans and support for struggling students.
  • Design opportunities for students to use the world as a classroom through field trips or guest speakers.
  • Hold students to high behavioral and academic expectations and support their success.
  • Model professional and collegial behavior.
  • Engage in collaborative evaluation with school leaders.
  • Ensure students are well-prepared for New York State exams and WCHS interim assessments.
  • Participate in all assemblies, meetings, school-sponsored events, and professional development.
  • Participate in focus groups, evaluations, and committees for school improvement.
  • Support WCHS's open-door classroom policy, observing colleagues for professional development.
  • Arrive by 7:55 AM and leave no earlier than 3:10 PM, or as needed to support students.
  • Teach four class periods per school day.
  • Serve two periods of School Service per week (e.g., Study Hall supervision, cafeteria duty).
  • Cover at least five periods per semester for absent teachers.
  • Proactively involve students' families in their learning through regular communications.
  • Provide students with life skills and a sense of community responsibility.
  • Share expertise and curriculum with colleagues.
  • Respond to all school-related communications within 24 hours.
  • Attend and participate in school-related activities outside normal hours.
  • Adhere to all WCHS handbooks and policies.
