About The Position

The Nutrition Technician answers telephone calls to receive patient meal orders and uses room service and hospital-wide order-entry software to process meals, snacks, and oral nutrition supplements in accordance with patients’ dietary needs and food allergies. The position applies department procedures and training to support safe meal selection, communicate with dietitians and supervisors, maintain documentation, and follow up on missed meals. Regular and predictable attendance is an essential job function, and the technician must be competent to meet the age-specific needs of the assigned unit.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
Nutrition experience preferred.
Ability to maintain a sitting and/or standing position.
Ability to stoop, crouch, or bend.

Responsibilities

Receive patient meal orders by telephone and process meals, snacks, and oral nutrition supplements using the room service and hospital-wide order-entry software.
Use the allergy clarification flow chart, appropriate scripts and questions, and knowledge from training and diet classes to ensure orders comply with dietary requirements and food allergies.
Understand dietitians’ role in allergy management and alert dietitians to needed allergy changes in the EMR.
Help patients choose viable alternatives when their initial menu selections conflict with dietary requirements, providing information that enables positive food choices and patient satisfaction.
Take messages, answer questions, and relay information to supervisors and clinical dietitians according to department guidelines.
Maintain required documentation.
Follow up on missed meals to offer food to patients.
Assist with guest trays and staff meals according to procedures.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Maintain regular and predictable attendance.
Meet the age-specific needs of the assigned unit.
