About The Position

The Nutrition Services Lead is directly responsible to the Manager, the building Principal and the Supervisor of Secondary Nutrition Services Programs for the development and coordination of a site cafeteria in a secondary school. This role operates the Child Nutrition Program (CNP) within established guidelines for Nutrition Services, ensuring a cost-effective program of high integrity. The Lead observes and coordinates meal service activities to provide nutritious meals and safeguard the health of students, staff, and visitors, ensuring all activities conform to school, Nutrition Services, community, and KSDE standards. They make recommendations for staffing, schedule employee's daily job functions, and train new employees. The position requires professional discretion and confidentiality in managing staff and administering the program, utilizing good communication and management skills. The Lead maintains accurate payroll and timecard information, ensures food safety during preparation, and exhibits working knowledge of the Nutrition Services HACCP plan, following Standard Operating Procedures. Responsibilities include ensuring the cleaning and sanitation of the kitchen and serving area, demonstrating knowledge of kitchen equipment operation and training employees on its safe use, and maintaining onsite items needed for daily meals and ala carte sales. They order food and supply items, verify amounts received, plan daily menu production, and conduct monthly inventories. The Lead also maintains customer accounts, keeps accurate records for Nutrition Services and KSDE, manages cash reserves, and prepares daily and monthly reports, including meal accountability and edit checks. Meals are prepared in accordance with USDA guidelines and menus, and daily production records are maintained. The Lead acts as the Cafeteria Manager during their absence and communicates with the Nutrition Services Office regarding production, health inspections, and maintenance issues. They support the philosophy and mission of Nutrition Services and perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Two (2) years of management experience in food service
  • Ability to count money, make change, and perform basic math functions required
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and directions as provided by Nutrition Services
  • Ability to pay attention to detail and follow CNP regulations

  • Maintains onsite items needed for the daily meals and ala carte sales.
  • Orders food and supply items needed for daily meal production from vendors, warehouse, and Food Production Center.
  • Verifies the amount ordered versus received of groceries and supplies received from vendors, FPC, and the central warehouse.
  • Plans daily menu production based on centralized menus and maintains an inventory for onsite production.
  • Conducts monthly inventory of food and supply item on site.
  • Maintains free, reduced priced and full paid customer accounts, charges and balances accurately.
  • Keeps accurate and timely records for Nutrition Services and KSDE.
  • Maintains cash reserve (hold money) and prepares accurate daily report.
  • Prepares monthly meal accountability report, which includes accountability for a la carte items sold and accurate accounting of money collected on the linen.
  • Reviews Edit Check for each day and includes this report in the monthly reports.
  • Prepares meals in accordance with USDA guidelines and follows menus.
  • Maintains Daily Production Records.
  • Acts as the Cafeteria Manager during their absence.
  • Communicates with Nutrition Services Office of issues related to daily production, health inspections and maintenance issues such as equipment repair and pest control.
  • Supports the philosophy and mission of Nutrition Services.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Assists with additional duties as assigned by supervisor.
