About The Position
Zeta is seeking passionate Chess Teachers for the 2026-2027 school year to join their mission of providing a world-class education that combines high academic achievement with social-emotional development. Zeta operates elementary and middle schools in New York City and is expanding to include its first high school class. The organization is dedicated to changing the landscape of public education and ensuring every student receives an excellent, equitable education. As a Chess Teacher, you will play a crucial role in fostering strategic thinking, problem-solving, and deep focus in students, while also cultivating a love for chess and building a strong classroom community. You will leverage chess to strengthen critical habits and collaborate with colleagues to integrate chess meaningfully into the broader school experience.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree
- At least 1-2+ years of teaching experience
- Mastery of Chess (rating of 1600 and above)
- Permanent authorization to work in the U.S.

Responsibilities
- Execute a bold vision of excellence in Chess, designing inquiry-driven, intellectually rigorous lessons that cultivate strategic thinking, problem-solving, and deep focus in every student.
- Build a vibrant, inclusive classroom culture where students develop a genuine love for chess, embrace productive struggle, and feel connected to a strong community of learners and families.
- Champion Zeta’s ambitious academic goals—leveraging Chess to strengthen critical habits like focus, perseverance, and pattern recognition that help students excel across all subjects.
- Use data, student work, and research-based tools to monitor progress, drive achievement, and elevate students from foundational skills to advanced strategic mastery.
- Develop authentic, trusting relationships with students and families to support each child’s growth—on the chessboard and beyond.
- Contribute to whole-school initiatives and provide instructional support as needed, ensuring Chess is meaningfully woven into the broader schooling experience.
- Collaborate closely with colleagues and engage in weekly professional learning, embracing coaching, reflection, and feedback to sharpen your craft and continually grow as an educator.
