About The Position

This position will provide the intern with the opportunity to gain a strong understanding of the issues surrounding food insecurity in the DMV Area. While working with our nutrition education team, they will get an in-depth look into various programs and approaches that are being deployed directly by the Food Bank and indirectly through food assistance organizations to address the issue of food insecurity both in the short and longer term. Interns are a vital part of the Capital Area Food Bank. The intern will also gain valuable training and experience that will allow them to confidently educate others about nutrition and food preparation. The Nutrition Education Intern will travel to different sites around the DMV region doing nutrition education, including food demonstrations/samplings. They will work closely with the Nutrition Education Specialist and Director of Nutrition to develop and implement several nutrition education initiatives in our teaching kitchen. The intern will have the opportunity to contribute to nutrition-related curriculum as well as research projects. The intern will also support the nutrition education specialist with administrative tasks related to our food assistance partner organizations, wellness partner program and other client programming. This is a 20-hour per week position.

Requirements

  • Access to a car to travel throughout the DMV
  • Highschool diploma/GED
  • Proficiency with basic computer software programs (including MS Word)
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to work independently and cooperatively as part of a team
  • Must be available to work on Saturdays
  • Commitment to work for a six-month period

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to plan and organize personal work responsibilities according to priorities developed with the supervisor
  • Nutrition-related knowledge/experience/background preferred
  • Experience working with the target audience preferred
  • Comfort with and interest in purchasing and preparing foods and reviewing recipes
  • Experience in adult education or other relevant work experience preferred

Responsibilities

  • Conduct food demos/food samplings on site, at direct distribution sites and other locations once a week.
  • Assist with workshops/classes and field trips in the teaching kitchen.
  • Conduct research for nutrition programming.
  • Conduct pantry partner outreach for Healthy Pantry Initiative.
  • Help maintain the nutrition education closet and teaching kitchen.
  • Promote and support nutrition education programs.
  • Survey administration and data entry.
  • Design and distribute nutrition education materials.
  • Distribute and track recipe cards across DC, MD, and VA sites
  • Develop and test new recipes, including nutrient analysis.
  • Create and edit “recipe videos” for our recipe video library
  • Assist other departments with nutrition education goals across the organization.
  • Timely and consistent expense tracking.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
