The Nursing Supervisor RN is responsible for supervising nursing personnel and overseeing nursing care. This role involves teaching and guiding nursing staff and residents, performing assigned duties as directed by the Assistant/Director of Nursing Services, and analyzing nursing service needs to determine the daily staffing plan based on established patterns and resident needs. The supervisor will address personnel, staffing, and resident care issues, conduct resident rounds to assess conditions, and notify physicians and families of changes. They will also assist with staff replacements, contribute to nursing service goals, and arrange for resident transfers to hospitals when necessary. This position may involve taking charge of a unit in the absence of the Nurse in Charge and participating in the facility's Quality Assurance program through audits and record reviews, instructing staff on procedures and corrections. The supervisor receives reports from the previous shift, may assist with employee orientation, and interprets and enforces facility policies. They handle individual performance issues, evaluate incidents, determine emergency measures, and provide or direct emergency treatment. Incident reports are completed with investigations and recommendations. Work performance is reviewed against standards, and good public relations are maintained. The supervisor is available for emergencies, promotes safe work practices, and participates in policy formulation. They ensure a clean, safe, and therapeutic environment for residents, manage employee call-ins, and promote professional growth through literature and meetings. Facility meetings and inservices are attended as required, and the progressive disciplinary process is initiated for conduct violations. Regular supervisory rounds ensure quality resident care and adherence to policies. In emergencies like fire or disaster, appropriate action is taken, and medical care is instituted. Other duties may be requested, including obtaining emergency drugs, administering new drugs, assisting with staff shortages, managing supplies, and sending referrals. Infection control procedures are initiated when necessary, and other administrative tasks for the Nursing Services Department may be performed. Quality control on glucometers is completed per policy. IV medications are administered, and flushes and care are ordered in the absence of a staff RN. Adherence to dress code and time/attendance policies is expected, along with practicing safe work habits and following all facility safety procedures to ensure resident safety, security, and well-being.
