About The Position

Fairview is hiring a Nursing Station Technician (NST) for their Med/Surg 7B unit at the M Health Fairview University of Minnesota Medical Center - East Bank location in Minneapolis, MN. The University of Minnesota Medical Center (UMMC) is an integrated academic health care system comprising two hospitals and dozens of adult specialty clinics on both the East and West banks of the UMMC campus. It serves as Fairview's flagship facility, focusing on breakthrough medicine and community health. This position is 0.6 FTE, working 48 hours every two weeks, with 8-hour day shifts (7am-3:30pm) and an every other weekend rotation. The 7B unit is a 22-bed unit providing care for adult patients undergoing Thoracic Surgery, Urology Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Bariatric Surgery, General Surgery, and those with Cystic Fibrosis or General Medicine needs. Patient ratios are 7-8 patients for day and evening shifts, and 11 patients for night shifts.

Requirements

  • Basic Life Support (BLS for Healthcare Providers) certification required. OnTrack participants must be able to obtain Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers certification upon completion of the OnTrack program.
  • Successful completion of Fairview’s OnTrack Nursing Assistant training program or another Fairview sponsored Nursing Assistant program
  • Six months of recent direct care experience in a long term, home care or acute care setting (Appropriate roles may include, Nursing Assistant, PCA, Resident Assistant or Emergency Room Technician)
  • Current enrollment in an LPN, RN or Nurse Practitioner program, and completion of one (1) semester of clinical rotation within the program
  • Current certification on the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry upon hire. This requirement does not need to be maintained throughout employment and is not required if subsequently transferring into another Nursing Assistant or Nursing Station Tech or Nursing Station Attendant position.

  • Previous experience as a Health Unit Coordinator, Nursing Assistant, or other related experience

Responsibilities

  • Deliver direct patient care and is cross trained to Health Unit Coordinator duties
  • Work under the direct supervision of a professional nurse to demonstrate excellent customer service, teamwork and communication skills with patients, families, and the healthcare team on a fast-paced unit
  • Perform patient care such as personal hygiene, vitals, daily activities, repositioning, transporting, and feeding
  • Maintain unit desk area functions such as answering phones, processing admissions, discharging and transferring forms, transcribing orders, assembling patient charts and ordering tests
  • Set up and maintain patient rooms
