Nursing Station Clerks 1 are assigned to inpatient or outpatient units and have daily contact with patients. They greet visitors and direct them to appropriate locations, answer telephones, perform data entry, maintain daily and clinical logs, prepare and update patient charts and files, complete medication tickets and pharmacy requisitions, mail patient letters, and deliver supplies and records to an assigned unit. The position is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). For the duration of the program, the title may be filled by non-competitive appointment without an examination, provided candidates meet the title's minimum qualifications. Agencies may make temporary appointments. The posting explains that qualifying temporary NY HELPS employees may later be converted to permanent non-competitive status, with a future conversion to competitive status expected. The role requires excellent communication and interpersonal skills, knowledge and understanding of patient care, and the ability to respond effectively to changing patient needs, make decisions based on ethical principles, and adhere to high standards of excellence. The position may be designated essential during institutional emergencies. It may require respiratory protection, which may prohibit facial hair, and shifts or pass days may change as necessary. Before starting, the selected candidate must pass a pre-employment physical and receive medical clearance, complete an electronic reference check with at least three professional references, pass a four-panel drug screen, meet regulatory pre-employment screening requirements, and provide copies of any required New York State licenses or certificates. The position is at Stony Brook Medicine, a smoke-free campus.
