The nursing graduate shall practice only under the direct supervision of a registered nurse who is physically present on the unit to cosign medication transcription, medication administration, and nursing documentation; and continually observe, assist, coordinate, evaluate, and monitor the nursing graduate. The nursing graduate shall use the initials NG after their name as credentials. They will transcribe medication orders per written policies and procedures once skill validation has been successfully completed, administer medications and controlled substances, and document in the medical record with the abbreviation NG. The nursing graduate will perform patient assessments after the initial assessment or after the first assessment of the shift performed by the registered nurse. They will also perform and document routine procedures taught within the nursing graduate's generic nursing program, including placing nasal gastric tubes, performing urinary catheterizations, applying sterile dressings, performing blood sugar checks, and obtaining specimens. A nursing graduate must cease practice as a nursing graduate immediately if they fail two attempts at the NCLEX exam or have not successfully taken and passed the NCLEX exam within 120 days of application to the board of nursing. A nursing graduate may not work without the physical presence of and direct supervision by a registered nurse, refer to oneself or practice as a registered nurse (RN) or licensed practical nurse (LPN), be considered a staff person for purposes of a staffing pattern, accept charge responsibilities, or perform initial patient assessment or the first patient assessment of a shift, develop patient plans of care, evaluate or document patient discharge, or independently administer medications or intravenous therapy.
