The Nursing Assistant (NA) assists the Registered Nurse (RN) with the daily care of patients. This includes tasks such as bathing, oral hygiene, feeding, managing activity orders, and ambulation. The NA is responsible for measuring and documenting vital signs, intake and output, and daily weights. They also accurately document patient information in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and perform purposeful rounding under the direction of the RN, promptly communicating observations and concerns. The NA participates in the admission, transfer, and discharge process, ensuring patient call lights are accessible and answered promptly. They collect specimens, perform point-of-care testing, and complete various errands. Maintaining stock for the nursing area, cleaning equipment, and work areas are also part of the role. The position involves patient positioning and transporting, requiring lifting and pushing/pulling with proper technique and assistive devices. The NA assists with nutritional needs, skin integrity, and ensures special patient supplies are provided. Depending on unit requirements and under RN direction, tasks may include removing IVs, providing post-mortem care, and performing bladder scans. The NA practices within infection prevention policies, demonstrating hand hygiene and knowledge of aseptic procedures. They must demonstrate knowledge of age-specific care and principles of growth and development.
