About The Position

The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Nursing is seeking a Nursing Assistant to perform specific tasks to assist members of the Nursing team in providing patient care under the direct supervision of Registered Nurses. This position is located in the Surgical and Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit (SNICU), which is the largest intensive care unit in Iowa, seeing more than 2,500 patients each year. The 36-bed unit is staffed by a multidisciplinary team skilled in the care of acutely ill surgical and neuroscience patients. The SNICU provides care for patients requiring intensive care following surgery, as well as those suffering from respiratory failure, sepsis, multi-system trauma, peri-operative complications, acute neurological injuries, pre- and post-organ transplantation care, and pain. The unit utilizes advanced monitoring techniques and equipment for a full range of intensive care services. The SNICU is committed to providing care that assists critically ill patients and their families to cope with the physiological and psychological components of their illness or injury, aiming to maximize well-being and attain a dignified and peaceful death when necessary. The unit has received numerous honors and awards, including Joint Commission certifications for stroke care and palliative care, ACS Verified Level 1 Trauma Center status, and the AACN Silver Beacon Award for Excellence.

Requirements

  • Ability to read, write and follow instructions.

Responsibilities

  • Perform patient personal hygiene such as bathing, toileting, feeding, dressing, grooming and oral care for patients
  • Turn, position and ambulate patients
  • Assist patients with bedpans, urinals and perineal cleansing
  • Take temperature, pulse and blood pressure
  • Enter daily patient record charting in computer
  • Perform simple diagnostic/therapeutic procedures (i.e., dressing changes)
  • Clean equipment, patient bedside area and nursing unit
  • Set up rooms for patient admission
  • Transport patients by bed, cart or wheelchair
  • Transport equipment, specimens and supplies
  • Stock and supply patient rooms and Nursing unit
  • Perform basic CPR as required
  • Maintain patient confidentiality
