About The Position

UPMC Hamot is seeking a compassionate, dedicated Full-Time Nursing Assistant to join our 6 South team. In this role, you will provide essential patient care under the direction of healthcare professionals, ensuring the highest standards of quality, safety, and compassion. The 6 South unit is a 43-bed Medical/Surgical unit that provides post-operative care for adult Cardiothoracic, Vascular, and Gastric Bypass/Weight Loss patients. The unit also cares for patients requiring telemetry or oxygen monitoring and specializes in comprehensive care for kidney transplant donors and recipients, including post-transplant patients. Additional services include CPAP, BIPAP, and Optiflow oxygen therapy, glycemic control, vasoactive medications, anti-arrhythmic medications, electrolyte replacement, and hemodynamic medication administration. Title and salary will be determined based on education and experience.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Successful completion of UPMC nursing assistant training program
  • Knowledge of body mechanics and transfer techniques.
  • Work permit required if under 18 years of age.
  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct patient care under the direction of the RN, including activities of daily living (ADLs) such as bathing, feeding, toileting, ambulating, turning, repositioning, and transporting patients.
  • Performs UPMC Nursing Assistant core responsibilities, including vital signs, blood glucose testing, point-of-care testing, weights, intake and output monitoring, specimen collection, Foley care, telemetry monitor application/reapplication, restraint application and removal, and Hospital-Acquired Condition (HAC) and patient safety indicator prevention activities.
  • Observes patients and reports changes in condition, concerns, or needs to the RN in a timely manner.
  • Maintains a safe, clean, and organized environment by completing safety checks, changing linens, cleaning equipment, managing supplies, and keeping patient care areas free of hazards.
  • Obtains, stocks, distributes, and manages supplies and equipment necessary for patient care delivery.
  • Delivers patient nourishments, fills water pitchers, distributes mail, and assists with other comfort measures.
  • Responds to call lights and telephones, assists with meal tray distribution, patient transport, and other unit support activities.
  • Provides diversional activities, companionship, and one-on-one supervision for patients as assigned.
  • May apply, monitor, and remove patient restraints in accordance with physician orders and hospital policy.
  • Documents patient care and related activities in the medical record according to established procedures.
  • Completes clerical and administrative duties as needed to support department operations.
  • Communicates effectively and professionally with patients, families, physicians, and members of the healthcare team while fostering respectful interpersonal relationships.
  • Demonstrates accountability, professionalism, cultural awareness, teamwork, and a commitment to continuous learning and improvement.
  • Participates in performance improvement initiatives, identifies learning needs, seeks feedback, and takes action to enhance knowledge, skills, and performance.
  • Adheres to all hospital policies, patient confidentiality requirements, infection prevention standards, bloodborne pathogen protocols, and workplace safety procedures.
  • Reports equipment malfunctions promptly and assists in maintaining a safe patient care environment.
  • Responds appropriately within the scope of the Nursing Assistant role during emergent situations.
  • Access to medications is limited to the distribution of medications to the nurse.
