About The Position

Advocate Lutheran General Hospital is seeking a part-time Nursing Assistant for the 4WCE unit. This role is 0.6 FTE, requiring alternating weekends and holidays. The Nursing Assistant will play a crucial role in ensuring patient satisfaction and maintaining a high quality of care under the supervision of a registered nurse. Responsibilities include assisting patients with daily living activities, monitoring vital signs, maintaining a clean and safe environment, and effective communication with patients, families, and healthcare professionals. The position also involves participation in quality improvement initiatives and professional growth activities.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Ability to read, write and follow instructions as required.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Courteous and professional interpersonal skills.
  • Basic math calculation skills.
  • CPR (Heart Saver) certified within 6 months of employment.
  • Certification as a Nursing Assistant by the State of Illinois.
  • Ability to communicate with customers.
  • Ability to push and pull equipment associated with duties.
  • Ability to do medium lifting (20 to 50 pounds occasionally and/or 10 to 25 pounds frequently and/or up to 10 pounds constantly).
  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance for direct patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Introduce self and role to patient at start of shift and provide fresh water.
  • Place call light and phone within patient's reach.
  • Listen to patients and solicit information about their needs.
  • Involve patients in decisions about their care.
  • Answer call lights promptly.
  • Assist patients with elimination needs.
  • Provide morning or evening care, including bathing assistance, oral care, and hair care.
  • Straighten patient's room and change bed linens.
  • Transport, transfer, lift, and position patients as directed.
  • Ambulating non-bed ridden patients.
  • Feed patients as needed.
  • Collect and transport specimens to the lab.
  • Transport equipment, supplies, specimens, and pharmacy items.
  • Communicate with patients, families, and other healthcare professionals in a positive and respectful manner.
  • Address and resolve customer complaints.
  • Ensure on-time completion of performance pathway tasks.
  • Send out co-worker feedback forms.
  • Submit self-evaluation to leader before review.
  • Participate in the TNT associate satisfaction survey.
  • Submit ideas for improving customer satisfaction.
  • Receive report from previous assistant at start of shift.
  • Prepare NPO list and hang NPO sign for night shift.
  • Communicate with patients in layperson's terms.
  • Participate in the admission, transfer, and discharge process under the supervision of the registered nurse.
  • Set up patient room, obtain necessary supplies and equipment.
  • Introduce self to patient and family; assist patient in changing into a patient gown.
  • Ensure patient identification band placement.
  • Assist with patient transfer or discharge, ensuring belongings are accounted for and communicating special needs to the receiving unit.
  • Maintain a clean, safe unit environment.
  • Respond to call lights and communicate patient requests to RN.
  • Demonstrate ability to respond appropriately to emergency situations.
  • Use proper body mechanics.
  • Remove discontinued equipment to soiled utility room.
  • Report unsafe/malfunctioning equipment and remove from use.
  • Clean and disinfect equipment and return to proper storage.
  • Restock patient rooms with appropriate equipment and supplies.
  • Practice within infection control policies and procedures.
  • Take and record vital signs, weight, height, intake and output (I/O) and notify RN with abnormal results.
  • Provide appropriate skin care and report areas of pressure, redness or abrasions.
  • Document patient information on appropriate forms.
  • Act as patient/family advocate by providing comfort, assistance and information.
  • Communicate patient/family concerns and issues to appropriate nursing staff.
  • Provide report to following assistant at end of shift.
  • Recognize and adopt activities appropriate to the specific need of the patient population.
  • Perform all work in accordance with safety procedures and requirements.
  • Participate in efforts to monitor and improve departmental CQI indicators.
  • Submit ideas for improving quality in your department.
  • Schedule yourself to complete requisite hours of training per quarter.
  • Develop a learning plan and track progress on a learning log.
  • Attend all department/hospital in-service orientation and other meetings as required.
  • Submit Dynamite ideas to your leader.
  • Identify improvement ideas within scope of responsibility and assume accountability for implementation.
  • Participate in hospital-wide or departmental DIG each year.
  • Implement Just-Do-It initiatives in your department.
  • Interact with co-workers in a team atmosphere.
