About The Position

This is a Full-Time Nursing Assistant/Patient Care Technician position on the GI Surgery & Oncology unit (10N) at UPMC Presbyterian. The unit is a 25-bed, all-private room surgical oncology unit specializing in Gastrointestinal and Liver Surgery. The patient population includes those with colon, gastric, and pancreatic cancer, as well as gastrointestinal disorders requiring surgery. The unit also manages patients undergoing liver resections, chemotherapy, and common bile duct injuries. Close collaboration with Palliative Care and Hospice is integral to providing comprehensive end-of-life care. The unit offers an opportunity to develop professional experience in all areas of surgical care. All hired candidates are required to complete a mandatory training course with full attendance expected.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Act 34

Nice To Haves

  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic or currently enrolled in an EMT or Paramedic program preferred.
  • ACLS preferred.
  • For the Senior title posted, the candidate must also have either: a) 2 years of general healthcare experience and meet requirements of Patient Care Technician title, OR b) 1 year of experience and enrollment in PT/OT/PA program with completion of at least one clinical rotation, or c) 1 year of experience and completion of a bachelor's degree in a health sciences field.
  • May require successful completion of the appropriate UPMC cardiac rhythm course as determined by organizational guidelines and unit-based clinical operations.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver routine patient care and support services, following established policies and procedures.
  • Under the direction of nurses and/or physicians, ensure high-quality patient care is maintained at all times.
  • Assist with ADLs (bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, turning, repositioning, and blood glucose monitoring).
  • Take vital signs, perform simple dressings, 12-lead EKGs, bladder scans, and collect specimens.
  • Report equipment malfunctions and communicate effectively with the healthcare team.
  • Ensure patient and workplace safety, demonstrate professionalism, and maintain productive relationships.
  • Provide patient care, support therapies, and assist with instruction under RN guidance.
  • Adhere to all policies, safety standards, and document patient information appropriately.
  • Complete tasks in a timely manner, including clerical functions as needed.

  • Nursing Assistants and Patient Care Technicians will also be expected to work 12-hour shifts, with the possibility of a mix of 8-hour and 12-hour shifts.
