This position is located at the SC Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD) - Office of Mental Health, C.M. Tucker Jr. Nurse Care Center-Roddey Pavilion, 2200 Harden St. Columbia, SC 29203. As the Certified Nursing Assistant, working under the supervision of the Nurse Supervisor, you will function as a Nursing Assistant on an assigned shift and unit. You will provide specialized nursing care to a culturally diverse geriatric and psychiatric population requiring long-term nursing care based on individualized nursing care plans, perform various clerical functions by assisting physicians, nursing staff, and other pertinent facility staff, and maintain current medical records according to the facility's policy and procedures.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or GED.
  • Must hold credential as a certified nursing assistant.
  • Ability to lift up to fifty (50) pounds.
  • Ability to see, hear at normal volumes, stand, walk, reach, pull, stoop, bend and climb at least two (2) or three (3) flights of stairs.
  • Ability to tolerate noise level and circulate in patient areas for long periods.
  • Must be able to work with repetitive patient behaviors.
  • Have knowledge of assistive nursing procedures, sanitation, personal hygiene, basic health safety practices, and human anatomy.
  • Have ability to maintain attention to detail, make accurate technical and physical observations of patients, accurately communicate and record observations, carefully read and follow direction, work a flexible schedule, work in a team environment, and lift and move patients.
  • Have basic life skills including CPR, AED use, and ventilations.

  • Bilingual abilities in English and Spanish (or another language) are a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a role model for the CNA staff by demonstrating effective leadership and communication skills.
  • Review nursing care plans and assignment sheets and assist other certified nursing assistants in providing a safe and therapeutic environment.
  • Under the supervision of Nurse Supervisors or Nurse Managers, demonstrate competency in assisting with monitoring resident care, C.N.A. documentation, and other related activities with completeness and accuracy.
  • Make meaningful observations. maintain organized documentation of residents' records, and report findings to the charge nurse for follow-up with appropriate personnel.
  • Under the supervision of Nurse Supervisors or Nurse Managers, serves as a mentor for all certified nursing assistants.
  • Basic understanding of quality and performance improvement management and active participation in continuous quality control management.
  • Schedule residents' appointments, notify appropriate personnel in the SCOMH Reimbursement Office via e-mail and fax, notify the proper personnel of resident bed or room changes, and ensure communication of resident diet changes to nutritional staff.
  • Prepare consultation forms as facility policy dictates, arrange weekly medical visits to include consults and lab results, and send requested resident care and treatment information to P.T, Speech Therapy. R.T., Dietary. and Podiatry.
  • Maintain accurate and current labeling of all residents' folders, ensure prompt completion of consultations, file and scan all documents into resident's E.H.R. system according to facility policy, maintain laboratory and consultation log for facility reimbursement and notify the Nursing Administrator monthly, and send all medical records to the HIS Department within five (5) working days upon the discharged or death of a resident.
  • Answer telephone and correspond with visitors politely and professionally.
  • Order, maintain, and store adequate supplies for efficient unit operation per pre-set stock levels; monitor expiration dates: confer with nursing staff regarding the residents' care plans.
  • Assist with escorting residents to their doctor's appointments.
