About The Position

The School Nurse for the Dedham Public Schools is a skilled professional who provides assessment and evaluation of the student’s health and implements the delivery of health care to the student as determined by her professional expertise and experience. The School Nurse works closely with the Supervisor for Health Services and with the building Principal. This position is a part-time, school year position and is covered by a Collective Bargaing Agreement.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing
  • CPR/First Aid Certified
  • Current Active Massachusetts Nursing License

Responsibilities

  • Planning, implementation, follow-up and statistical data-keeping for all state mandated school health screening programs: Physical exams in grades 4, 7, and 10
  • Vision and hearing screening in grades K-12
  • Postural screening in grades 5-9
  • Height and weight measurement in grades K-12
  • Communicable disease programs, including immunization recording, review and updating as mandated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.
  • Exclusion and readmission of pupils for health related reasons.
  • Health counseling and referral for students and staff.
  • Maintaining and updating cumulative student health records.
  • Administering emergency care for school-related injuries and illnesses utilizing the standard procedures developed by the Health Services staff in accordance with recognized standards of nursing practice.
  • Acting as a liaison between school and home when there is a health condition causing a pattern of absences.
  • Obtaining parental permission and then informing appropriate members of the school staff of a student’s health related issues.
  • Providing health guidance and education to students, families and staff.
  • Serving as a resource in the school health education programs as well as in community health education programs that serve students, families, and school personnel.
  • Promoting a healthy and safe environment.
  • Actively involved as the health specialist in team evaluations and subsequent follow-up.
  • Responding in a professional manner in accordance with state mandates to students as risk, including victims of child abuse and neglect, substance abuse, and adolescent sexuality and pregnancy.
