Nurse Tech Pediatric Emergency Department
About The Position
The Nurse Tech works as a member of the care team delivering quality patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse or Provider. The role performs basic skills according to department guidelines, communicates observations to the health care team, and collects and reports patients’ and families’ physiological, psychological, sociocultural, and spiritual needs in coordination with and as directed by the RN or Provider. Duties include taking vital signs, checking blood sugars, bed bathing, ambulating patients, wound care, catheterization, and serving as a patient safety attendant. The Nurse Tech ensures documentation is accurate and completed on time. The position is in the Pediatric Emergency Department at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital, the only pediatric emergency department in West Michigan. The hospital is a Level I trauma center with a pediatric trauma care team and staff trained in pediatric emergency, trauma, and burn care. Orientation includes four classroom days, Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., followed by six to eight weeks of full-time floor orientation. The first four weeks of floor orientation are on day shift, and candidates must have at least two weekdays available. The regular schedule is part-time, 24 hours per week, with hours from 7:00 p.m. to 3:30 a.m. on variable days and every third weekend.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- AHA or ARC Basic Life Support (BLS), required within 90 days.
- Must have at least two weekdays available during the first four weeks of floor orientation.
Responsibilities

- Collect and report patients’ and families’ physiological, psychological, sociocultural, and spiritual needs in coordination with and as directed by the RN or Provider.
- Take vital signs and check blood sugars.
- Provide bed baths and assist with ambulation.
- Perform wound care and catheterization.
- Act as a safety attendant for patients.
- Complete required documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
