About The Position
The Medical ICU is a 24-bed unit within the Meijer Heart Center, specializing in the care of critically ill patients. This includes those with complex medical conditions such as diabetes, ketoacidosis, mechanical ventilation needs, critically ill bone marrow transplant patients, sepsis, and pneumonia. The unit has recently been renovated and offers a unique experience in a brand-new critical care environment. The Meijer Heart Center focuses on advanced heart and vascular care, including complex surgeries and transplants, driven by research, innovative treatments, and best practices. The Nurse Technicians in this role support nurses and ancillary staff in providing care to patients requiring ventilator support, life-sustaining medications (cardiac and sedation), and assist with bedside procedures like tracheostomies and central line placements. The ICU is a fast-paced, interdisciplinary environment that relies on teamwork. Responsibilities include checking blood sugars, vitals, patient hygiene, ambulation, wound care, catheterization, and acting as a safety attendant. Accurate and timely documentation is essential. Nurse Techs may also be floated to other departments with similar training if there is a higher need.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- AHA or ARC Basic Life Support (BLS) Required within 90 days
- 1 year of patient care experience is strongly preferred
- Flexibility with availability
Responsibilities
- Support nurses and other ancillary staff in providing competent care of patients requiring ventilator support.
- Administer life-sustaining titratable medications including cardiac and sedation medications.
- Assist with bedside procedures including preparation of the sterile field for tracheostomies, central line placement, and dressing changes.
- Check blood sugars, vitals, perform bed bathing, ambulate patients, assist with wound care, and catheterization.
- Act as a safety attendant for patients.
- Ensure required documentation is performed in an accurate and timely manner.
- Float to other departments of higher need with similar training.
