The Labor and Delivery Unit within Butterworth Hospital is a fast-paced procedural unit, similar to a surgical environment, with 28 beds, 11 triage areas (5 prep & recovery bays, 3 ORs), averaging 8,000 births per year. Butterworth Hospital, located in Grand Rapids, is a nationally recognized hospital for patient quality and safety and the regional leader in full-service hospitals. Since 1873, it has been growing and building a reputation of excellence in care, diagnostics, treatment, prevention, and education, serving as the flagship hospital for Corewell Health Grand Rapids Hospitals. In the Labor and Delivery Unit, Nurse Techs assist RNs in turning over and sanitizing OR rooms, stocking supplies, supporting mom recoveries, performing bed bathing and cleaning babies, taking vital signs, collecting data for charting, positioning/ambulating patients, and transporting patients within the hospital before/after delivery. They may also cover the Unit Secretary desk during lunches or sick days. The Nurse Tech functions as a team member in delivering quality patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) or Provider, performing basic skills according to department guidelines and communicating observations to the healthcare team. Patient care responsibilities include taking vital signs, transportation, collaborating with the RN, blood sugar checks, ADLs, and potentially providing 1:1 patient observation within the unit or acting as a safety sitter on other units.
