About The Position

The Team Leader is a Registered Nurse who supports the safe, effective, and coordinated daily operation of an inpatient clinical unit. The role provides clinical leadership, operational coordination, and point-of-care support to ensure high-quality, patient-centered care while supporting staff, learners, and interprofessional collaboration.

Requirements

  • Registered Nurse in good standing with the applicable nursing regulatory body.
  • At least two years (or 3900 hours) of clinical experience within the mental health and addictions field
  • Demonstrated clinical experience in inpatient care settings.
  • Strong leadership, communication, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to coordinate care and staffing in a fast-paced clinical environment.
  • Knowledge of interdisciplinary team roles, patient safety principles, and clinical standards.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and manage conflict effectively.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to use electronic clinical and scheduling systems.

  • Previous experience in a formal or informal team leadership role.
  • Experience supporting staff education, student supervision, or clinical mentorship.
  • Experience participating in quality improvement or change initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate admissions, discharges, transfers, and appointments during assigned shifts.
  • Lead management of the unit milieu, prioritizing safety, quality, and patient-centered care.
  • Facilitate service delivery and ensure patients, families, and visitors are oriented to the unit.
  • Carry a patient assignment as required based on unit acuity, census, and staffing.
  • Support emergency response and management of critical incidents.
  • Coordinate nurse-to-patient assignments and ensure accountability for care.
  • Assign breaks, coverage, close observations, and off-unit activities.
  • Monitor staffing levels, respond to sick calls, and advocate for staffing adjustments.
  • Ensure assignments and staffing records are accurately documented using established systems.
  • Support orientation of new staff, students, and temporary staff to unit procedures.
  • Coordinate learning opportunities, unit rounds, care conferences, and team huddles.
  • Support clinical education activities while balancing unit coverage and patient needs.
  • Liaise with leadership and after-hours support regarding patient care and staffing matters.
  • Coordinate shift handover and ensure accurate census, bed flow, and transfer-of-care reporting.
  • Assign operational duties such as emergency response roles, safety checks, and equipment monitoring.
  • Promote a culture of safety, collaboration, and mutual respect.
  • Support implementation and evaluation of best practices and quality initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with professional standards, legislation, and organizational policies.
