About The Position

The primary purpose of this job position is to supervise the day-to-day nursing activities of the facility during the assigned tour of duty. This supervision must be in accordance with current federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations that govern the facility, and as directed by the Director of Nursing, to ensure the highest quality of care is maintained at all times. As the Nurse Supervisor/Unit Manager, you are delegated the administrative authority, responsibility, and accountability necessary for carrying out your assigned duties.

Requirements

  • Nursing Degree from an accredited college or university, or be a graduate of an approved LPN program.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience as a supervisor in a hospital, long-term care facility, or other related health care facility.
  • Training in rehabilitative and restorative nursing practices.
  • Current, unencumbered, active license to practice as an RN or LPN in this state.
  • Current 'Eligible' AHCA Background Screening Status.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
  • Ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant.
  • Ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies, and the general public.
  • Knowledgeable of nursing and medical practices and procedures, as well as laws, regulations, and guidelines pertaining to long-term care.
  • Leadership and supervisory ability and willingness to work harmoniously with and supervise other personnel.
  • Ability to plan, organize, develop, implement, and interpret programs, goals, objectives, policies, and procedures.
  • Patience, tact, a cheerful disposition, and enthusiasm.
  • Willingness to seek out new methods and principles and incorporate them into existing nursing practices.
  • Ability to relate information concerning a resident's condition.

  • Must meet the general health requirements set forth by the policies of this facility, which include a medical and physical examination.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Assistant Director of Nursing in directing the day-to-day functions of the nursing service department.
  • Participate in developing, maintaining, and updating written policies and procedures for the nursing department.
  • Ensure reference materials at the nurses' station are current.
  • Recommend written material to assist the nursing department in meeting resident needs.
  • Ensure the Nursing Service Procedures Manual is current and reflects daily nursing care procedures.
  • Ensure all nursing service personnel comply with the Nursing Service Procedures Manual.
  • Make written and oral reports/recommendations to the Director regarding the nursing department's operation.
  • Periodically review department policies, procedure manuals, and job descriptions, making recommendations for revisions.
  • Assist in developing methods for coordinating nursing services with other resident services.
  • Ensure all nursing service personnel comply with their respective job descriptions.
  • Participate in the development, maintenance, and implementation of the facility's quality assurance program for the nursing service department.
  • Participate in facility surveys conducted by government agencies.
  • Periodically review and update the resident's written discharge plan.
  • Assist the Director in planning the nursing service portion of the resident's discharge plan.
  • Meet with nursing staff and support personnel to plan department services, programs, and activities.
  • Admit, transfer, and discharge residents as required.
  • Complete accident/incident reports.
  • Interpret department policies and procedures to personnel, residents, visitors, and government agencies.
  • Complete annual performance evaluations and competencies for staff.
  • Perform administrative duties such as completing medical forms, reports, evaluations, studies, and charting.
  • Attend various facility committees (e.g., Infection Control, Policy Advisory, Pharmaceutical, Budget, Quality Assurance & Assessment).
  • Serve on the Quality Assurance and Assessment (QA) and Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) Committees.
  • Assist in preparing reports for committees.
  • Provide information to QA and QAPI Committees as requested.
  • Participate in developing the agenda for Care Plan Committee meetings.
  • Review discharge plans and make them available to the Care Plan Committee.
  • Implement recommendations from established committees.
  • Ensure sufficient licensed nurses and certified nursing assistants are available for each tour of duty.
  • Develop work assignments and delegate tasks.
  • Delegate administrative authority to Charge Nurses.
  • Make daily rounds to ensure personnel are performing assignments correctly.
  • Monitor absenteeism to ensure adequate staffing.
  • Report problem areas to the Director.
  • Ensure established policies and procedures, including dress codes, are followed.
  • Review and address complaints and grievances from department personnel.
  • Develop and maintain good working rapport with inter-departmental personnel.
  • Create and maintain a positive and calm environment.
  • Meet with shift staff to identify and correct problem areas.
  • Review and evaluate the department's workforce and make recommendations.
  • Participate in employee performance evaluations and staffing requirement determination.
  • Ensure fair and non-discriminatory disciplinary action.
  • Report occupational exposures according to facility policies.
  • Inform nursing staff of new admissions and escort them to rooms.
  • Ensure rooms are ready for new admissions.
  • Make rounds with physicians as necessary.
  • Encourage timely recording and signing of physician progress notes and orders.
  • Inform the Director of delayed physician visits.
  • Consult with residents, families, and physicians regarding resident care.
  • Notify physician and next of kin of changes in resident condition.
  • Visit residents daily to assess physical and emotional status.
  • Ensure direct nursing care is provided by qualified personnel.
  • Review nurses' notes for accuracy and informativeness.
  • Provide direct nursing care as necessary.
  • Start IVs and obtain specimens for lab tests.
  • Take vital signs as necessary.
  • Report problem areas to the Director and assist in corrective action.
  • Keep the Director informed of resident status and related matters.
  • Monitor seriously ill residents.
  • Authorize the use of restraints when necessary.
  • Ensure compliance with medication and supply administration, storage, and control procedures.
  • Monitor medication passes and treatment schedules.
  • Review medication cards for completeness and accuracy.
  • Inspect treatment areas daily for cleanliness and safety.
  • Ensure residents unable to call for help are checked frequently.
  • Meet with residents and/or family members as necessary.
  • Arrange transportation for discharged residents.
  • Inform family members of resident deaths and call funeral homes when requested.
  • Participate in developing, planning, conducting, and scheduling in-service training classes.
  • Develop and implement an effective orientation program for new employees.
  • Provide leadership training for Charge Nurses.
  • Encourage Charge Nurses to attend outside training programs.
  • Assist in developing and revising the nursing assistant training curriculum.
  • Assist in developing annual OSHA and CDC in-service training programs.
  • Assist in developing advance directive in-service training programs.
  • Assist support services in developing in-service training programs.
  • Ensure in-service training programs meet continuing education requirements for licensed personnel.
  • Attend and participate in continuing education programs.
  • Assist the Safety Officer in developing safety standards for the nursing service department.
  • Assist in identifying, evaluating, and classifying tasks with potential exposure to blood/body fluids.
  • Ensure personnel participate in appropriate in-service training for potential exposure.
  • Ensure an adequate supply of personal protective equipment is available.
  • Monitor personnel to ensure adherence to safety regulations.
  • Ensure compliance with established departmental policies and procedures.
  • Ensure nursing service work areas are clean and sanitary.
  • Ensure resident care rooms and treatment areas are clean, safe, and sanitary.
  • Ensure personnel follow established handwashing procedures.
  • Ensure personnel participate in fire safety and disaster preparedness drills.
  • Participate in the development and maintenance of the infection control program.
  • Ensure personnel follow infection control procedures when isolation precautions are necessary.
  • Participate in developing and maintaining procedures for reporting hazardous conditions or equipment.
  • Ensure personnel use safety equipment when moving or lifting residents.
  • Report missing/illegible labels and MSDSs.
  • Recommend equipment and supply needs to the Director.
  • Ensure an adequate stock level of medications, medical supplies, and equipment.
  • Participate in developing a preventive maintenance program for nursing department equipment.
  • Participate in developing and implementing procedures for the safe operation of nursing service equipment.
  • Ensure only trained and authorized personnel operate department equipment.
  • Ensure personnel operate nursing service equipment safely.
  • Monitor nursing procedures to ensure efficient use of supplies and avoid waste.
  • Ensure appropriate MSDSs are on file for hazardous chemicals.
  • Participate in developing resident assessments and care plans.
  • Participate in developing resident care plans that identify problems, needs, goals, and responsibilities.
  • Encourage resident participation in care plan development and review.
  • Review resident care plans for appropriate goals, problems, approaches, and revisions.
  • Ensure personnel are aware of and refer to resident care plans.
  • Review nurses' notes to ensure care plans are followed.
  • Assist in planning, scheduling, and revising the MDS, including RAPs and Triggers.
  • Review resident treatments to ensure they align with the care plan.
  • Keep abreast of economic conditions and recommend adjustments to nursing services.
  • Recommend equipment needs for the nursing department.
  • Maintain confidentiality of resident care information.
  • Monitor nursing care to ensure fair treatment, kindness, dignity, and respect for residents.
  • Ensure privacy and knocking before entering resident rooms.
  • Ensure personnel are knowledgeable of resident rights and responsibilities.
  • Review and report resident complaints or grievances to the Director.
  • Maintain a written record of resident complaints and actions taken.
  • Report and investigate allegations of resident abuse or misappropriation of property.
  • Ensure staff honor resident refusal of treatment requests.
  • Work in office areas and throughout the nursing service area.
  • Move intermittently during work hours.
  • Communicate with medical staff, nursing personnel, and department supervisors.
  • Work beyond normal working hours, weekends, and holidays when necessary.
  • Be subject to call-back during emergency conditions.
  • Attend and participate in continuing educational programs.
  • Relate to and work with ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and hostile individuals.
  • Push, pull, move, and/or lift a minimum of 35 lbs. to a minimum height of 5 feet and be able to push, pull, move, and/or carry such weight a minimum distance of 450 feet.
  • Assist in the evacuation of residents during emergency situations.
