About The Position

The Santa Clarita Community College District/College of the Canyons is seeking a full-time Nurse (Student Health Center) in the Student Services division. This position involves performing a variety of health services including providing nursing assessment and intervention to students; assisting in the delivery of health education services in the classroom; and assisting Medical, Advanced Practice (NP, PA) and Mental Health Providers with daily clinical services and/or operations. The role requires adherence to HIPAA and FERPA guidelines, and the ability to learn and apply emerging technologies. The nurse will work independently with a minimum of supervision and is expected to possess experience with Electronic Medical Records (EMR).

Requirements

Two (2) years of professional nursing experience within the last five (5) years, including experience in an outpatient, public health, or school/college health setting.
Experience in health promotion and disease prevention.
Experience or professional training in one or more of the following specialty areas: crisis intervention, mental health, drug and alcohol referral, and sexual assault response.
BSN required.
Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification.
Graduate of accredited school of nursing.
Valid and current Registered Nurse license issued by the State of California Board Registered Nursing.
Possess, or be able to obtain a CPR and basic first aid certification.
Possess a valid driver’s license.
Knowledge of HIPAA and FERPA guidelines.
Knowledge of California Nurse Practice Act.
Knowledge of General nursing skills required of a Registered Nurse.
Knowledge of Assessment techniques and nursing interventions for chronic and acute physical, mental, social and emotional problems.
Knowledge of Local health and human care resources.
Knowledge of Current techniques and practices in basic first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Knowledge of Principles of communicable disease prevention and control.
Working knowledge of various electronic equipment, personal computer, and associated office software such as word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and various database software.
Knowledge of District, policies and procedures.
Knowledge of State and local health mandates and regulations.
Ability to Perform venipuncture.
Ability to Perform medical and psychological health assessments applying nursing practices and processes.
Ability to Triage.
Ability to Give immunizations and perform TB skin testing.
Ability to Communicate effectively both orally and in writing with good interpersonal communication skills.
Ability to Interpret, apply, and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

Assist the Director of the Student Health and Wellness Center with the planning, development and implementation of student health services.
Employ a system of triage, identifying symptoms and behaviors, making independent nursing judgment regarding illness and injury and determines an appropriate course of action.
Provide basic first aid and initial emergency care intervention utilizing EMS when necessary.
Provide crisis intervention and referral for distraught students.
Performs phlebotomy and prepares specimens to send to outside laboratory.
Performs limited in-office CLIA-waived laboratory tests.
Maintain accurate medical records and protect privileged information.
Inform students of health insurance options; may refer students for assistance with Medi-Cal, or Family PACT insurance.
Perform health-screening tests requiring specific expertise; review test results; consult with the appropriate health care professional regarding additional testing and/or referrals as needed.
Advise students on a one-to-one basis for immediate problem solving and/or development of an individual health plan. This plan may include acquainting the student with private or community-based resources through which additional assistance may be obtained.
Assist with health education programs on a broad range of health and wellness issues.
Facilitate groups, workshops and outreach events on a variety of health promotion issues.
Assist in organizing and maintaining a variety of confidential health records and files related to routine health care, student insurance, accident reports, and statistics.
Assist in data collection and analysis from daily documentation, surveys, student learning outcomes and other sources.
Utilize data analysis to plan ongoing health services, prepare written reports, contribute to grant proposals and document the changing health needs of our population.
Maintain and order adequate levels of stock medication and medical supplies.
Manage and monitor the maintenance and upkeep of all medical equipment.
Organize and maintain examination rooms and other Health Center rooms in a clean and orderly condition.
Serve as a liaison between the college and community-based referral agencies.
Assist in the review and critique of policies, procedures, protocols and referral resources.
Act as a resource person regarding matters related to campus health and safety.
Maintain current CPR and first aid certificate training.
Ensure adherence to HIPAA and FERPA guidelines.
Learn and apply emerging technologies and advances as necessary to perform duties in an efficient, organized and timely manner.
Perform duties at all district sites.
Work independently with a minimum of supervision.
Possess experience, and use/ knowledge of Electronic Medical Records (EMR).
Perform other related duties as assigned or required.
