About The Position

SVMHI has two (2) full-time Nurse Shift Supervisors (NSS) who work a designated evening or night shift and are accountable for patient care for a census up to and sometimes exceeding 72, and for 65-95 nursing employees on duty throughout the facility. The NSS’s plan, direct and coordinate medical and health services in a psychiatric hospital, public health agency for the successful operations of a 24-hour a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year nursing unit at the facility. This position is responsible for the entire hospital operations for the duration of their shift. With other NSS’s and Unit Managers, ensures administrative presence in facility 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. NSS duties include responding to emergency codes, overseeing admissions and discharge processes on given shift, patient transportation needs, receiving staff call ins and overseeing staffing and scheduling needs for the shift, assisting with nursing staff development, problem solving with electronic health record, electronic nursing scheduling / timekeeping systems, and 24-hour nursing report. Coordination of centralized departmental leadership to oversee efficient resources on a shift-by-shift basis for patient care according to the facility and nursing department’s mission, vision, values, standards, policies, and procedures. Ensure quality patient care meeting accrediting agency standards (TJC, CMS, OIG, and so forth) for patients with mental illness through administration of medication, provision of treatments, and direct-care services on adult and geriatric units. Ensure recovery concepts and DEFUSE interventions are incorporated into daily practice for adult and geriatric patient populations from the pre-admission process through discharge in relation to nursing care and responsibilities. Collaborates with other disciplines and departments especially medical, clinical, human resources, and administrative staff. This is a third shift position that will work 11:00 pm - 7:30 am as scheduled. This position will require some flexibility in schedules, which will include some weekends and holidays in rotation as assigned by the Chief Nursing Officer.

Requirements

  • Licensed, or license eligible, and in good standing as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia. License must remain valid throughout employment.
  • A valid driver's license is required and must remain valid throughout employment.
  • Previous nursing management and/or Shift Administrator experience.
  • Extensive work experience in psychiatric nursing.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the principles and practices of psychiatric nursing to provide care appropriate to the adult patient populations.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and schedule nursing staff with effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively use electronic health record, nursing scheduling, communication, and reporting systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide leadership and interventions in emergency codes.
  • Demonstrated ability to make difficult decisions with authority and ownership and through appropriate consultation.
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve problems using data, obtaining input from others, and evaluating results.

  • Must successfully complete TO (Therapeutic Options) Training and CPR and must maintain throughout employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Ensure TJC, CMS, OIG, and other regulatory/accrediting agency standards are implemented and met.
  • Work in a secure and locked environment with individuals who are experiencing acute symptoms of mental illness and/or additional forensic/legal involvement.
  • Perform physical demands such as: repetitious walking and/or standing; bending, lifting, and reaching overhead to position, restrain, transfer, transport, and/or escort patients and to perform or assist them in activities of daily living.
  • Be flexible with schedule and assignments working overtime in staffing emergencies or inclement weather situations.
  • Time-adjusting work schedule throughout the work week.
