About The Position

The University of Pennsylvania, a world-renowned leader in education, research, and innovation, is seeking a Nurse Risk Management Analyst. This role involves reviewing and tracking incident reports, conducting investigations, performing regulatory reporting, and acting as a resource for health system employees on risk management issues. The position also includes investigating patient complaints, participating in relevant committees, preparing clinical summaries for legal reviews, and providing educational sessions on risk management. The Nurse Risk Management Analyst will review incident reports, enter data, and ensure follow-up is completed. They will identify reports needing further investigation, report to regulatory agencies as necessary, and conduct investigations under the direction of in-house counsel or peer review committees. This includes preparing written reports on adverse events with liability exposure, assessing and organizing medical reports, gathering facts, and providing medical literature when appropriate. The analyst will serve as a resource for health system employees on topics such as informed consent, documentation, and policies. They will investigate patient complaints with potential liability, determine management methods, and assist in preparing response letters. Participation in committees like the Incidents & Occurrences Committee and Patient Safety Steering Committee is expected, along with providing data on identified risk management issues. Educational sessions will be delivered to departments on various risk management topics. The role also involves assisting with the interpretation of medical aspects of malpractice claims and promoting patient and visitor satisfaction through courteous and respectful interactions. The employee must maintain an accurate incident report database, generate data reports, and evaluate potentially compensable events, demonstrating strong analytical and writing skills. Frequent contact with healthcare providers and attorneys is anticipated, requiring effective interpersonal skills, tact, diplomacy, and common sense. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • BA/BS degree in Nursing required
  • Professional Nursing License in Commonwealth of PA required
  • 3 years’ clinical experience within last 5 years

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience in health care risk management, quality assurance, or case management positions preferred

Responsibilities

  • Review & track incident reports ensuring that follow-ups are complete
  • Perform investigations under direction of in-house counsel or hospital peer review committees
  • Complete regulatory reporting within the required timeframe if indicated
  • Prepare reports of adverse events resulting in liability exposure
  • Act as resource person for all Health System employees concerning risk management issues
  • Investigate patient complaints & determine most appropriate method of management
  • Participate on committees that address issues with risk management implications
  • Complete clinical summaries for medical legal reviews
  • Provide risk management educational sessions to individual departments or units
  • Provides written reports under the direction of in-house counsel, of potential claim and claim events, which involve assessing and organizing medical reports; the gathering of all necessary facts and information; and the provision of medical literature when appropriate.
  • Investigates patient complaints with potential liability exposure.
  • Determines the most appropriate method of management and assists in the preparation of response letters.
  • Provides data to committees regarding risk management issues identified through the incident reporting process.
  • Provides assistance to the Claims Coordinator, in-house counsel, and defense counsel in the interpretation and understanding of the medical aspects of malpractice claims.
  • Promote organizational values of patient and visitor satisfaction by demonstrating courtesy and respect for patients and their families, visitors, and other employees.
  • Demonstrates the ability to maintain an accurate and current incident report data base, along with the ability to generate data reports.
  • Performs the evaluation of potentially compensable events and prepares reports demonstrating excellent analytical and writing skills.
