This position works under the general direction of the institutional Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and may be required to work at more than one institution. The Nurse Practitioner will monitor the progress of and intervene in the course of chronic illnesses, using DRC policies and protocols for guidance. They will inoculate or vaccinate against communicable diseases, prescribe medications or administer treatment of acute and chronically ill patients, and perform minor surgery as training and competency allow. The role involves performing routine physical exams of patients to determine control or status of chronic conditions and diagnose new conditions. The Nurse Practitioner will evaluate patients for the necessity of specialty referral consultations, order and review diagnostic testing, and facilitate the completion of medical reclassification and requests for non-formulary medications. They will perform routine and emergency medical care of inmate patients, examine, diagnose, and treat patients within the scope of practice, and document medical information according to guidelines. The position requires cooperation with CMO medical quality oversight and attendance at professional meetings and quality improvement sessions.
