About The Position

This is a full-time Nurse Practitioner (NP) position in the psycho-oncology department within cancer care services at Stanford Palo Alto. The NP will function under the supervision and mentorship of Psych MDs, seeing new consults, providing behavioral and psychotherapy, managing medications, and addressing urgent patient needs. The role involves a full-time commitment (1.0 FTE) with four 10-hour days per week, likely Monday through Thursday, though the schedule may be adjusted based on team needs. The position also offers opportunities to participate in quality improvement initiatives, research, and potential group therapy pilots. This is a fully benefited exempt position within Stanford Health Care.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in a work-related Discipline/Field from an accredited College or University
  • Graduate of an NP Program Accredited by the National League of Nursing Commission for Nusing Education Accreditation (CNEA) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE)
  • NP - Nurse Practitioner
  • Nursing/RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure And/Or Compact State Licensure
  • BLS - Basic Life Support
  • NPF - NP Furnishing Number
  • Must be competent to perform medical services consistent with NP's education/population foci, training, and experience.
  • Must consult with a physician regarding any task, procedure, or diagnostic problem exceeding the NP's level of competence or refer such cases to a collaborating physician.
  • Must abide by all Joint Commission requirements.

Responsibilities

  • See new consults independently under the supervision and mentorship of Psych MDs.
  • Provide behavioral and psychotherapy.
  • Perform medication management as appropriate.
  • Address urgent/same-day patient needs.
  • Participate in QI, research, and potentially group therapy pilots based on team interests and needs.
  • Provide routine care and management of patients with acute and chronic complaints in collaboration with the supervising physician.
  • Implement standardized procedures for patient care.
  • Evaluate and treat patients with acute, chronic complaints and health maintenance concerns related to specialty.
  • Obtain complete histories and perform pertinent physical exams.
  • Perform or request and evaluate diagnostic studies.
  • Administer, order, furnish, and prescribe medications according to standardized procedures.
  • Order and collect specimens for routine laboratory tests, screening procedures, and therapeutic procedures.
  • Order physical therapy, occupational therapy, respiratory therapy, radiology examinations, and nursing services.
  • Perform designated procedures after demonstrated competency.
  • Obtain informed consent as indicated.
  • Initiate arrangements for hospital admissions and discharges and complete appropriate paperwork.
  • Enroll patients in investigational studies approved by the IRB, and order necessary tests and medications as directed by the supervising physician.
  • Assist the supervising physician in the operating room after appropriate training.
  • Recognize and consider age-specific needs of patients.
  • Effectively communicate and interact with patients, families, staff, and members of the community from diverse backgrounds.
  • Recognize situations requiring immediate physician attention and initiate life-saving procedures when necessary.
  • Facilitate the coordination of inpatient and outpatient care and services.
  • Facilitate collaboration between providers and coordination of community resources.
  • Ensure compliance with legal, regulatory, and clinical policies and procedures.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives.
  • Provide and coordinate patient teaching and counseling.
