About The Position

The Nurse Practitioner at Worcester County Detention, Snow Hill, MD, specializes in the ambulatory care of inmate patients while maintaining the standard of professional nursing. Nurse Practitioners work with a variety of healthcare professionals and security officers in a correctional environment to ensure effective patient care delivery and achievement of desired patient outcomes. Correctional Nurses provide care to inmate patients to promote & improve their overall health utilizing the nursing process in triage, professional training and various resources in accordance with regulatory agencies and established guidelines. The inmate patient population often generally has not had consistent access to healthcare prior to their incarceration. This provides an opportunity for nurses to see and care for an interesting variety of health concerns from minor ailments to major and atypical conditions.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
  • Current, unrestricted RN license in the state of practice (maintain copy on file)
  • Certified Nurse Practitioner in the state of practice
  • Current DEA, CDS, and DEA-X licenses
  • Minimum 2 years of direct patient care as a Nurse Practitioner preferred
  • Strong critical thinking, clinical assessment, and decision-making skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team
  • Assertive, empathetic, and objective in-patient care
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills
  • Basic computer proficiency and accurate electronic documentation skills
  • Ability to command respect and confidence of inmates and staff
  • Active Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Ability to pass required health and screening tests
  • Availability for nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call duties as required

Responsibilities

  • Performs and documents medical evaluations on inmate patients of the assigned correctional facility consistent with the National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC) standards of care, NJ 10-A, American Correctional Association (ACA) and Performance Based National Detention Standards (PBNDS) as appropriate.
  • Assesses patients’ mental and physical status based on the presenting symptoms and complaints.
  • Construct treatment plans for inmate patients incorporating ways to address the patients’ problems and enhance patients’ strengths, involve patients in their development, and include relapse prevention risk management strategies.
  • Writes prescriptions for medications as allowed by state regulations and under the guidelines of the approved CFG formulary.
  • Monitors patients’ medication
  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary team members, including psychiatrists, psychologists, or nursing staff to develop, implement, or evaluate treatment plans.
  • Documents patients’ medical histories, physical assessment results, discharge summaries, and transfer orders.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with health care professionals and others.
