Nurse Practitioner - Antepartum-Birth Center

UCSF•San Francisco, CA

About The Position

The Nurse Practitioner joins UCSF’s inpatient Obstetric team and partners with antepartum specialists to provide expert care to patients with high-risk pregnancies, chronic health conditions, or pregnancy complications. The team delivers direct clinical and consultative services to patients and obstetric providers in obstetric care and fetal disorders. The role focuses on antepartum care (estimated at 75% of time) and postpartum activities (estimated at 25%); this distribution may change based on Birth Center coverage needs. Clinical duties include rounding on patients admitted to or followed by the antepartum service; conducting antepartum consultations before and often after delivery; evaluating patients in the Obstetric Emergency Department; assessing and escalating findings from clinics and the antepartum testing unit; receiving initial consultations from outside providers; communicating care plans to consulting providers; and addressing ongoing needs of patients discharged from the antepartum service. The NP works in close collaboration with Maternal-Fetal Medicine attendings and fellows, OB/GYN residents, nurse coordinators, and other members of a high-acuity interdisciplinary labor and delivery team. The position requires flexibility to practice at all UCSF locations and to work weekends occasionally as operational coverage needs require. The NP independently or collaboratively evaluates and manages patients, takes histories, performs physical examinations, responds to changes in patient status, performs consultations, orders or furnishes medications and diagnostic tests or treatments, and documents care in the electronic medical record. The NP participates in rounds and care planning, reviews and interprets diagnostic results, initiates consultations, develops individualized care and discharge plans, coordinates care across the continuum, and provides patient and family communication and discharge education. Outpatient independent encounters, including telehealth, may also be part of the work. Procedures and first assist in the operating room may be performed only when the NP has the relevant privileges and required certification and proctoring. UCSF APPs must complete credentialing, privileging, and health plan enrollment before their first working day and maintain applicable requirements for each facility where they provide care. The NP is expected to be accountable for their clinical practice, participate in patient and staff education, serve as a resource for colleagues and trainees, demonstrate leadership, and mentor newly hired APPs.
