About The Position

Provides specialized nursing services in areas such as school-based health care, women's health care, family planning, and primary care. Requires considerable medical judgment and an advanced level of nursing competency, including a Nurse Practitioner license and prescriptive privileges. Works under the general supervision of the Clinical Director and Medical Director, and is responsible for guiding Registered Nurses, Certified Nursing Assistants, and Medical Assistants. The role involves performing complex medical services, diagnosing and treating clients, prescribing medications, performing laboratory procedures, providing case management, conducting health education classes, and maintaining electronic medical records. Additionally, the position may involve in-service education for nursing staff, administrative duties, attending training, performing research, and coordinating staff events.

Requirements

  • Current license from the California Board of Registered Nursing.
  • National certification from the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners or other national certifying bodies.
  • Certificate of completion of a Nurse Practitioner Program.
  • Minimum of 2 years clinical experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of nursing techniques and procedures.
  • Thorough knowledge of medical and lab equipment and testing procedures.
  • Thorough knowledge of medication.
  • Considerable knowledge of interviewing and counseling techniques.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and patiently with clients.
  • Ability to establish and maintain records, reports and statistical data.
  • Ability to use initiative and judgment.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other related agencies, professionals and citizen groups.
  • Ability to perform and record total physical examination.
  • Ability to obtain vaginal, cervical, urethral and rectal cultures, papanicolaou smears, and other laboratory specimens appropriate.
  • Skill in diagnostic procedures for diseases and the drug therapy needed for treatment of these medical conditions.
  • Proficiency in the use of medical and laboratory equipment.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
  • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Responsibilities

  • Obtains and records client's health history.
  • Performs comprehensive physical assessment (including biological, social and psychological needs) as part of a total physical examination.
  • Diagnoses, treats and plans appropriate health care for clients in the area of school based health care, women's health care, family planning, and primary care as appropriate for specialists; refers clients to physicians and/or outside agencies as required.
  • Provides and prescribes medications within area of specialty.
  • Performs laboratory procedures and interprets lab test results.
  • Provides case management services for select clients.
  • Provides group, individual and community education classes on birth control methods, sexually transmitted diseases and other health concerns.
  • Establishes and maintains client’s electronic medical records and other necessary records.
  • Provides in-service education classes on assigned responsibilities for nursing staff.
  • Performs other nursing duties as assigned.
  • Assume general administration duties including fax, filing, copying, etc.
  • Attend webinars, workshops, training and/or meetings as requested by the Clinical Director.
  • Perform special project research and data collection activities as requested by Clinical Director; analyze and interpret data, and prepare reports.
  • Coordinate special staff events and prepares and distributes promotional flyers for such events.
