About The Position

Sun River Health is continuing its Nurse Practitioner Residency Program with a new and improved program starting September 2026 at its Jeannette J. Phillips Health Center in Peekskill, New York. This program is designed for new nurse practitioners committed to developing their careers in the challenging setting of a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) and/or with special populations, with a focus on rural/migrant health. The residency aims to prepare Nurse Practitioners to assume full responsibility for the primary care of complex underserved populations, develop clinical and operational confidence for practice in an FQHC, and increase the number of Nurse Practitioners choosing long-term careers in FQHCs. The program includes a one-year employment commitment after completion.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree
  • Valid license as a Nurse Practitioner in New York State
  • Knowledge of diagnostic and treatment procedures that nurse practitioners are trained to do and are necessary for practicing in health care centers.
  • Competence in delivery of health care to patients (including preventative health education)
  • Ability to collaborate with other members of the Health Center in order to maintain high quality standards and achieve client satisfaction.

Nice To Haves

  • Bilingual in both English and Spanish (orally and written) is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Provide primary care to patients, including obtaining complete patient histories, performing physical exams, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, and developing treatment plans.
  • Complete rotations with specialty populations, particularly in rural and underserved areas, to gain experience in various healthcare settings.
  • Perform preventative health assessments, screenings, immunizations, and provide direct treatment and management of health conditions.
  • Counsel and educate patients and their families/caregivers on preventative health, treatment options, and community resources.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of patient assessments and care plans, ensuring compliance with established protocols.
  • Work collaboratively with internal and external preceptors to ensure smooth clinical experiences and gradual progression of expertise and skills.
  • Adhere to all organizational policies and procedures, including established medical and specialty protocols.
