About The Position

The Department of Pediatrics, Division of Pediatric Hematology & Oncology is recruiting for an Advanced Practice Provider (NP/PA) to work full time primarily in the Pediatric Sickle Cell Clinic and some Pediatric Hematology Clinic at Shawn Jenkin’s Children’s Hospital in Charleston, South Carolina. Responsibilities also include providing health maintenance and disease prevention based on appropriate age and concomitant risk factors. Following established protocols, nurse practitioners/physician assistants assume responsibility for patient care management of a variety of patient populations. Duties will include comprehensive orders for clinic visits, evaluation and management of patients, progress notes, and care coordination. The APP demonstrates leadership skills, establishes effective relationships with patients, their families and members of patient care. The APP will function within the requirements of the State of South Carolina Board of Nursing or SC Board of Medical Examiners including designation of supervising/collaborating physician, alternate physicians and written protocols/scopes of practice guidelines, updated annually.

Requirements

  • Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as a Physician Assistant
  • Completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as an APRN (Primary Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner or Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PCPNP/PNP) for pediatric patients (birth to age 21), stable chronic disease state management or primary care setting; or Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) for patients from birth to death, stable chronic disease state management, primary care across the lifespan).
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
  • DHEC and DEA license applications must be started prior to first day.
  • Excellent clinical skills, experienced with efficient, direct patient care.
  • Active listening, critical thinking and the ability to reflect a professional and caring persona for patients and families.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong commitment to quality improvement and evidence-based medicine.

Nice To Haves

  • Pediatric Acute Care NP (PACNP) training.
  • Minimum of 1 year experience as a PA or NP working with sickle cell or hematology patients is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluates and treats based on history, physical examination, radiological, laboratory, and other diagnostic test results pursuant to the practice agreement or scope of practice guideline.
  • Initiates referrals to other health care providers and/or consults with the attending physician or the collaborating physician.
  • Documents and bills for direct care provided.
  • Utilizes current research and evidence-based decision-making in all clinical practice.
  • Performs and participates in quality/performance improvement activities and clinical research.
  • Participates in and supports accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities of the organization.
  • Demonstrates responsibility for professional practice through active participation in professional organizations and continuing education.
  • Potential to precept students at MUSC enrolled as an advanced practice provider student.
  • Facilitates the learning of other new team members.
  • Maintains licenses, certifications, CNEs/CMEs, etc., as required by applicable policies and state law.
