This position ensures the assessment of the patient and the direct and indirect care of the patient is delivered in accordance with all appropriate licensing boards, hospital policies, procedures, and all other professional standards. The role involves collecting patient assessment data, performing systematic physical exams and history of present illness, and documenting findings. The Nurse Practitioner will prescribe medications, demonstrate leadership, solve problems using critical thinking, and function as a resource and patient advocate. Responsibilities include assisting in maintaining/decreasing organizational costs, completing annual competencies, assisting with departmental compliance with regulatory agencies, participating in non-punitive medication reporting, and ensuring accountability for narcotics. The role also involves participating in emergency drills, providing for patient safety, utilizing two forms of patient identification, assuming appropriate code team roles, responding effectively during emergencies, and adhering to infection control processes and National Patient Safety Goals. The position participates in unit performance activities to enhance patient care and customer service, identifies initiatives to improve patient outcomes, and assists in chart reviews for performance improvement. The Nurse Practitioner manages the physical and psychological problems of the patient, implements treatment plans, evaluates responses to medications and treatments, and prescribes immunizations. They seek appropriate consultation, communicate effectively with the supervising physician and healthcare team, and maintain problem and medication lists. The role involves assessing and facilitating consultations, directing patients to appropriate care levels, and assisting in identifying resources for treatment or rehabilitation. In surgical settings, the Nurse Practitioner performs procedures, assists in surgery, preps and drapes patients, maintains sterile techniques, performs skin closures, monitors patients, performs suture removal and dressing changes, and is available for call from home for emergency surgeries. They provide pre and post-operative care, perform history and physicals, order appropriate testing, and prepare discharge planning. The role includes providing counseling and instruction to patients and families, facilitating timely treatment of abnormal labs, and developing workflow patterns for patient transfers or discharges. In the clinic setting, the Nurse Practitioner interviews, evaluates, and assesses patients, provides recommendations for treatment, adjusts medication, and provides patient/family education. They collaborate with the supervising physician and treatment team, alert the team to significant changes in patient status, review treatment goals, and document all patient interactions and assessments thoroughly. The position requires demonstrating leadership, problem-solving independently, maintaining accountability, and acting as a preceptor/mentor.
