About The Position

The position of Nurse Practitioner 2 in the Department of Surgery requires a highly competent, independent yet team-oriented individual who will be immersed in the management and coordination of all inpatient care of surgical patients, primarily located at our new hospital in Irvine, California. The surgical patients will include general surgery and specialty surgical services, on all levels of care, including the intensive care unit. Inpatient surgical services include colorectal surgery, ENT, general surgery, gynecology, hand surgery, minimally invasive surgery, plastic surgery, surgical oncology, thoracic, urology, vascular. This Nurse Practitioner position is represented by the California Nurses Association (CNA) union.

Requirements

Ability to obtain UCIMC Allied Health Professional Privileges prior to hire.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the program and UCI Health System.
Ability to exercise diplomacy and flexibility in interacting with physicians, nurses, other paramedical personnel, administrators, emergency and law enforcement officers.
Must demonstrate customer service skills appropriate to the job.
Skill to clearly communicate medical information to a broad variety of people, both in person and over the telephone.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Writing skills to prepare clear medical reports, laboratory data and progress notes.
Ability to maintain a work pace appropriate to the workload.
Must possess the skill, knowledge and ability essential to the successful performance of assigned duties.
Ability to be trained in the use of specialized medical equipment and procedures.
Demonstrates an understanding of and adheres to privacy, confidentiality, and security policies and procedures related to Protected Health Information (PHI) or other sensitive and personal information.
Current, active, unrestricted California Registered Nurse license.
Current, active, unrestricted California Nurse Practitioner license
Current, active, unrestricted Furnishing license and DEA registration.
Active National Provider Identifier (NPI).
NP National Board Certification (Beginning February 2018): Adult Gerontology Acute Care AGACNP-BC or ACNPC-AG
Current BLS and ACLS certification
One or more years of experience as Nurse Practitioner to support setting and patient population.
Must be able to provide proof of work authorization.

Nice To Haves

Knowledge of Windows and MS Office software applications (Excel, Word, Quest, Access, Power point and Outlook).
Experience in Trauma/Critical Care nursing.
Familiarity with UC policies and procedures.
Bilingual in Spanish and/or Vietnamese

Responsibilities

Evaluating care, ordering diagnostics and creating a treatment plan.
Participating with inpatient sign out/hand-off at beginning and end of shift.
Rounding and communicating with the surgery teams/residents/attending physicians.
Being responsible for surgical consultations on potential surgical patients.
Involvement in resuscitations of surgical patients from the ED and ICU.
Coordination of procedures (including scheduling operations and other procedures, etc) and follow-up.
Admitting and discharging patients (including admission H&P, orders, discharge summary, instructions, and medications) when appropriate.
Triaging phone calls from patients and nurses.
Reviewing critical labs, follow-up of results with patients and medical staff.
Obtaining comprehensive medical histories.
Performing initial and daily physical examinations/assessments.
Exploring patient’s health needs in a trauma informed manner.
Identifying, treating, and managing hospitalized patients.
Demonstrating an advanced level of medical knowledge, clinical/technical competence, sound clinical judgment, professional communication skills, timely and compliant documentation, and is responsible for professional development and competency validation.
Participating in the comprehensive care of patients in the inpatient settings and providing multi-disciplinary care coordination, treatment, education, monitoring, and communication with patients and referring physicians.
Assisting in the operating room (if RNFA credentials) collaborating closely with surgeons and the surgical team to ensure high-quality patient care throughout surgical procedures.
Functions as appropriate to their “scope of practice” (In general, the “scope of practice” includes the management of chronic stable medical conditions, routine care, acute or critical care, and medical and surgical procedures per their approved standardized procedure). Familiarity with state statute for their licenses is necessary.
Providing patient care in age groups based on educational preparation and at all Health licensed settings and affiliates.
Accountability for the standards of care for their specified patient population and evidencing self-direction and accountability both to quality of care and in the development of their role within the all Health locations and affiliates.
Being credentialed to practice and be privileged through Medical Staff to function in their clinical role. Credentialing and approval of privileges must be completed prior to the first working day.
Accountability to, evaluation by, and feedback from the supervising/collaborating physician, physician designee(s) in the same clinical specialty, or the Administrative Manager.
