About The Position

The Nurse Manager performs nursing duties in accordance with hospital policy/procedure and supervises other nursing personnel who are responsible for patient care. The Nurse Manager assumes 24-hour responsibility for the management of patient care and the personnel who are assigned to that area. This nurse has an in-depth knowledge of nursing practice/management and takes responsibility for the development and nurturing of self. This position will include accountability for maintaining high standards of patient care and nursing practice for the entire unit. The Nurse Manager is responsible and accountable for prescribing, delegating and coordinating the nursing care provided on the unit utilizing the nursing process. The position is limited to 1 per nursing unit.

Requirements

  • Associate Degree or 2 years of college coursework
  • Five years of related experience.
  • Requires broad knowledge of complex systems and procedures.
  • ACLS Certification
  • Georgia Registered Nurse License or Multistate Nursing License
  • Demonstrates leadership, sound judgement and the ability to organize.
  • Meets requirements for promotion to Nurse Manager.
  • ACLS required within 90 days of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates care with physicians.
  • Maintains effective communication with Nursing Director.

  • Collaborates with and supports other nurse managers, nurse supervisors and nursing colleagues to promote optimal utilization of resources among the various nursing units.
  • Attends and actively participates in hospital wide meetings or sends representative.
  • Conducts monthly staff meetings, uses bulletin boards etc. to inform staff of hospital wide issues and unit performance.
  • Communicates information that impacts staff's job, benefits or employment policies.
  • Accountable for maintaining quality patient care on unit.
  • Evaluates unit patient care, identifies opportunities for improvement, organizes data collection, and implementation of actions.
  • Works closely with RN III and IV to meet unit goals.
  • Develops, documents, implements and monitors unit specific written policies and procedures.
  • Educates and involves unit staff on performance improvement strategies.
  • Supports team members through development, implementation and expansion of learning opportunities and skill development.
  • Efficiently plans and manages nursing service for a patient care unit considering the patient/family, staff abilities, physician needs and hospital utilization.
  • Serves as a role model for excellent patient care.
  • Participate in direct patient care activities as a targeted strategy for role modeling or information gathering.
  • Plans, assigns and reviews the work of nursing and support staff.
  • Counsels and evaluates the performance of nursing and support staff.
  • Evaluates and manages equipment and supplies and recommend necessary purchases.
  • Plans and controls expenditures.
  • Assess the environment and make recommendations to ensure optimal patient comfort and safety.
  • Collaborate with Director of Nursing in determining the fiscal requirements of the specific unit, submit budgetary recommendations, including nursing personnel and patient care materials.

  • Maintains and updates professional skills pertinent to the managerial role.
  • May act as a preceptor for BSN students and Nurse Managers.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of rules, regulations, policies, procedures, standards of nursing practice.

  • Accurately evaluates self and establishes goals in self-directed manner.

  • With assistance from the Nurse Director, manages various personnel actions including hiring, orientation, performance appraisals, promotions, counseling and scheduling.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of physiologic norms, developmental level, signs and symptoms of abuse and neglect.
  • Able to assess, interpret data, communicate, adapt techniques, medications, and treatments for patients/families of all ages.
  • Educates and involve patients/families in care.
  • Employee performs within the prescribed limits of Tanner Health System's Ethics and Compliance program.
  • Is responsible to detect, observe, and report compliance variances to their immediate supervisor, the Compliance Officer, or the Hotline.
  • Supervises and manages nursing staff on the nursing unit.
  • Serves as a resource person for Staff Nurses, Nursing Supervisors and other departments.
  • Instructs employees and corrects their work as an active participant in staff development.
  • Assumes responsibility for quality and quantity of work, costs, and resources for patient care delivery and personnel.
  • Manages a medium-sized department of employees responsible for quality and quantity of work, cost, methods, and personnel, performs supervisory functions without intermediate supervisors.
  • Manages a large department of employees (40 and up); quality and quantity of work, costs, methods, and personnel, has one or more assistants and intermediate supervisors.
  • Tasks are multiple and diverse with some interrelationship across processes.
