About The Position

The Nurse Manager - Surgery is responsible for maintaining the clinical care aspects of the patient care unit on a 24-hour basis, working in collaboration with the Clinical Director. This role involves assisting in the development and evaluation of nursing personnel and serving as a clinical resource person for the designated unit. The Nurse Manager provides direction to nursing staff in utilizing the nursing process to ensure continuity of care for patients of all age groups. Key responsibilities include coordinating care by monitoring length of stay and assisting with transition planning for patients moving from acute care settings, collaborating with the Transition Care Team (RNs and Social Workers), and working with physicians to achieve established patient outcomes. Requirements

  • Baccalaureate Degrees in Nursing required
  • Licensed and currently registers as a professional nurse in the State of Illinois required
  • Certified in CPR or completes certification during Nursing Team Onboarding
  • Demonstrated leadership skill and ability required

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s Degree preferred
  • Three years of current clinical experience preferred
  • Preferred experience in clinical specialty

Responsibilities

  • Formulates policies and procedures specific to unit with approval of appropriate committee
  • Collaborates with medical staff to coordinate medical and nursing management of patients
  • Evaluates patient care daily with the use of rounding, huddles, review of medical record and patient care conferences
  • Supervises all clinical nursing activities
  • Ensures nursing documentation is complete, meets patient plan of care and adheres to policies and procedures
  • Serves as Clinical Resource for the nursing and ancillary staff specific to the specialty
  • Acts as a Resource for current technology available on the unit and for policy and procedure interpretation
  • Communicates to all ages groups using age appropriate communication skills
  • Demonstrates skill in performing care appropriate for the patient’s age group
  • Demonstrates knowledge in tools and tactics to manage staff in provide a great patient experience for patients, families and visitors
  • Collaborates with other members of the health care team to coordinate patient care and transition to the next level of care
  • Utilizes the nursing process to plan patient care and focus on patient and unit outcomes
  • Keeps immediate supervisor informed of patient care concerns and gaps in communications around patient care
  • Serves as an advocate for the patient and family
  • Participates in annual planning of Nursing Department Strategic Plan
  • Annually develop unit goals that are aligned with the department strategic plan
  • Assists the nursing department to meet the standards of regulatory agencies (IDPH, JC, etc.)
  • Complies with the National Patient Safety Goal measures unit outcomes
  • Participates in the implementation of the Magnet Recognition Program goals and guiding principles at the institutional, nursing department and unit level
  • Provides input into the unit level fiscal budget planning and maintains unit within proposed budget
  • Develop Performance Improvement program at the unit level which include monitoring studies, implementation of action plans for improvement and evaluation of outcomes
  • Demonstrates leadership in initiatives to support great patient experience, patient safety and desired clinical outcomes
  • Follows designated policies and procedures to manage emergency situations or drills
  • Supports the mission, vision and values of the hospital and health system
  • Demonstrates positive support for the nursing department and leadership and strategic direction of the hospital and health system
  • Participates in planning the daily staffing for the specific units
  • Utilizes the acuity system to make staffing decisions
  • Completes personnel evaluations within target date
  • Assists staff to set annual goals to meet personal and unit goals
  • Manages employee satisfaction to meet the top quartile and engage staff in making unit a great place to work
  • Initiates employee counseling and disciplinary actions as appropriate
  • Assists with orientation of new employees with Educational Services and appointed preceptors
  • Monitors new employee’s progress and provides documentation of the process
  • Functions as an advocate for the nursing staff
  • Supports an environment of learning thru providing clinical experiences for nursing students
  • Functions as shift supervisor as required
  • Functions as a resource in area of specialty for other nursing units and departments
  • Attends monthly department manager meetings, monthly nursing department leadership council meetings, and other meetings as required
  • Participates in committee work as requested (interdepartmental, nursing department, unit level, professional and community)
  • Initiates personal professional goals to expand clinical and leadership skills
  • Maintains personal portfolio for annual education and attends a minimum of 10 programs annually
  • Provides programs internally and in the community as requested
