About The Position

This position performs administrative, professional nursing work within the Juvenile Court Services Department. The position allocated to this class, under the supervision of the designated physician and the Juvenile Court Services Director, or designee, is responsible for planning, coordinating, supervising and administering the medical care program at the Juvenile Detention Center.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited school of professional nursing.
  • Five (5) years of professional nursing experience, one (1) year of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.
  • Possession of a current and valid Washington State License to practice as a registered nurse.
  • Requires successful completion of security check.

Responsibilities

  • Develops, writes, and implements policies and procedures for operation of the medical facility.
  • Reviews, evaluates and makes recommendations to the Detention Manager and Juvenile Director, concerning policy and systems modifications in the medical and mental health area.
  • Coordinates medical care for male and female residents.
  • Supervises RN's and Mental Health Professionals.
  • Trains, evaluates, advises and assists nursing staff in providing medical care to inmate population.
  • Reviews staff for appropriate licensing and required trainings.
  • Approves leave requests, monitors staffing levels and makes adjustments, as needed.
  • Assists in the preparation and monitoring of unit budget.
  • Reviews and monitors privacy and security of medical records and information systems within the department per HIPAA regulations.
  • Supervises the preparation and maintenance of medical records.
  • Completes quality assurance reviews and reports and prepares for audits.
  • Holds sick calls and examines patients to determine their need for medical care.
  • Assists the physician with physical examinations.
  • Documents nursing/medical care provided in the chart and the EHR.
  • Prepares, carries out, evaluates and revises treatment plans for individual patients based on personal observations, and on the observations and recommendations of the physician.
  • Treats minor ailments, under the direction of the physician.
  • Records and administers or oversees the administration of medications.
  • Takes samples of blood, urine, sputum, feces, gastric contents, gynecological cultures for laboratory tests.
  • Cares for and counsels ill, injured or infirm patients.
  • Coordinates care with community providers and parents/guardians.
  • Coordinates medical transports of detained youth.
  • Sterilizes medical supplies, establishes security measures to prevent loss or theft of drugs and supplies; requests supplies; delivers and distributes supplies.
  • Provides on-call services to Detention for after-hours emergencies or concerns.
  • Performs other related duties as required/assigned.
