The Nurse Manager - Emergency Department is responsible for planning, organizing, and delegating activities for the safe, efficient, and effective operation of the unit. This role involves active participation with other hospital departments and leadership to ensure optimal patient care outcomes. The manager will provide resources and guidance for evidence-based practice, facilitate processes for data and information utilization, and prepare the unit to meet credentialing body requirements. Key responsibilities include identifying and resolving barriers in the patient throughput process, managing patient care to improve performance, and ensuring documentation meets hospital and credentialing standards. The manager is also responsible for staffing, personnel functions including performance reviews and corrective actions, promoting professional growth and development, staff retention, and facilitating new staff orientation. They will support shared decision-making through the unit-based council, incorporate customer needs into operations, and promote team building. Budgetary responsibilities include preparing and managing operating and capital budgets, and evaluating patient care requirements based on acuity, system, and budgetary guidelines. Professional accountability includes involvement in professional organizations, hospital/department/system committees, staying current with professional activities, and addressing ethical and legal concerns. The manager will educate staff on the chain of command, act as a role model, adhere to the ANA Code of Ethics, comply with hospital policies and the Nurse Practice Act, and participate in community activities and peer review. They will also create development plans and complete reports in a timely manner.
