About The Position

This position is for the Department of Perioperative Nursing, Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Bethesda, Maryland. This is a Direct Hire Solicitation. Duties include providing for the safekeeping and accurate accounting of controlled drugs and narcotics in accordance with Defense Health Agency (DHA), MTF, and department guidance. The role involves teaching, mentoring, precepting, and onboarding professional and paraprofessional nursing staff, including potential trainees from various nursing programs and new staff. The nurse will manage the delivery of nursing care, utilizing knowledge of an extensive range of professional nursing theories, principles, and procedures, and provide highly skilled and specialized clinical care. Responsibilities also include contributing to the medical examination of patients by observing, recognizing, recording, and reporting changes, working without direct supervision once competency assessment and credentialing objectives are met, and maintaining a safe environment for patients and all other hospital employees.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position may have specific initial background investigation and periodic re-verification requirements since its duties require interaction with children and youth under the age of eighteen (18) years of age on a recurring basis.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 3 security investigation or access for the duration of employment.
  • A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • Immunization screening is required.
  • Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact.
  • Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
  • This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to pre-employment screening and random drug testing.
  • Selectees will be required to consent to participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
  • This position has mandatory seasonal Influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal Influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons (documentation of exemption must be provided upon hire).
  • This position requires the incumbent to have tuberculosis testing.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Red Cross. Advanced certification (e.g., ALS) does not supersede BLS.
  • This position requires the incumbent to fulfill credentialing requirements and obtain and maintain appropriate/relevant clinical privileges.
  • This position will include shift work (evenings, weekends, holidays, on-call).
  • Moderate to heavy lifting is required up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random drug testing, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • Position is designated as Inclement Weather Essential. The incumbent must make every attempt to report for work on time and/or remain on duty during severe weather conditions.
  • This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations, the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • This position may require the incumbent to work on call during irregular work hours which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and/or varying work schedules.
  • US Citizens
  • Degree: A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.).
  • Licensure: A current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States; and you must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination. (Note: you must attach proof of current / valid licensure).
  • Foreign Degree: Graduates of foreign nursing schools must have completed the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools Certification Program. The certification program consists of a credentials evaluation, the CGFNS Qualifying Exam, and evidence of passing one of the approved English Language Proficiency examinations. A copy of the CGFNS Certificate is required.
  • Exemption: You are exempt from the basic requirements above if you are a current federal employee occupying a position in the 0610 occupational series and have been continuously employed in this occupational series since September 27, 2017 or before. Note: You will be required to provide appropriate documentation to the respective Human Resources Office to validate your status.
  • Professional Nursing Experience: One or more full years of professional nursing experience which includes assisting in developing care plans for critically ill patients; administering patient medications (direct intravenous or other routes); providing emergency and/or life saving measures when responding to patient's life threatening situations; utilizing specialized medical equipment, such as epidurals, IV pumps, or ventilators.
  • Male applicants born after December 31, 1959 must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.
  • You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship.
  • This position requires a 1 year probationary period uring which the agency evaluates your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in a Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU).
  • PALS Certification preferred, if not, it will need to be completed 2 month upon coming on board.
