This position, under the direct supervision of an RN, will allow the nursing student / new graduate nurse the ability to expand their clinical experience while working through standard RN competency assessments on a wide variety of patient care activities, which include classroom training, participation in patient care planning, implementation, observation and evaluation, as well as reporting significant observations to the RN. The Nurse Extern program is designed for nursing students who are graduating within 12 months or less (Junior or Senior students) and are ready to gain hands-on clinical experience before graduation. Under the supervision of an RN preceptor, nurse externs will practice skills such as patient assessment, medication administration, IV pump adjustments, parenteral fluids, blood products, IV flushes, initiating/titrating/discontinuing oxygen, and basic data collection in an EMR. Externs can also practice skills for which they have received instruction and can provide evidence of a skill checklist. The program allows externs to spend time with clinical case managers, observe procedures, and participate in other relevant patient care activities.
