About The Position

Cabell Huntington Hospital is accepting applications for Nurse Extern positions. This program offers nursing students the chance to gain hands-on clinical experience and work with experienced Registered Nurses in a supportive learning environment. The program has specific application periods for January and May start dates. Eligibility requires students to be enrolled in an accredited nursing program, with specific semester/year completion requirements for ASN and BSN students. The program offers flexible scheduling with an ideal of 12 hours per week. There are two levels: Extern I (Entry Level) provides float experience across various units including Medical-Surgical, ICU, ER, Pediatrics, and Mother/Baby. Extern II (Advanced Level) is for students entering their final year and offers unit-based placements in Med-Surg, ICU, ER, and Women's and Children's units. Externs can shadow RNs and perform skills under supervision. The role involves supporting patient care by performing routine clinical tasks aligned with the extern's training and experience, under the supervision of a Registered Nurse and in accordance with hospital policies.

Requirements

• Currently enrolled in an accredited nursing program (sophomore level or higher)
• ASN students who have completed the first semester of their program
• BSN students who have completed the first semester of their sophomore year
• CPR certification required
• Must demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with patients and staff

Responsibilities

• Support patient care by performing routine clinical tasks aligned with their level of training and experience.
• Float experience across multiple units (Medical-Surgical, Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Emergency Room (ER), Pediatrics, Mother/Baby) for Extern I.
• Unit-based placements in Med-Surg, ICU, ER, Women’s and Children’s units for Extern II.
• Shadow an RN and perform skills under supervision.
