The Nurse Extern will perform patient care skills under the supervision of the RN preceptor and in accordance with Tower Health policies and procedures. It is a “professional nurse” focus for the prospective graduate nurse. A Nurse Extern Will: Accompany the RN preceptor at all times on the assigned unit; clinical, shared governance meetings, etc. Perform assessments along with the RN. Document in EPIC using Nurse Extern sign on. Perform duties listed on the skills checklist under the direct supervision of the RN A Nurse Extern May NOT: Administer medications Perform peripheral IV insertion or obtain blood draws from Central Lines Administer Blood or Blood byproducts Administer titratable /vasoactive drip infusions or IV Push medications Perform independent double check verification Obtain or verify verbal or phone orders from providers Witness consents Provide discharge instructions Be utilized as the unit’s PCA A Skills Checklist will be completed by the Nurse Extern. The RN preceptor will sign off concepts and skills covered with the Nurse Extern. Medical Units R3E Internal Medicine Unit- 42-bed Adult Med/Surg unit that provides care to adult and geriatric medical patients. R3E works closely with the Hospitalist physicians and the Hildreth Teaching Service Residents. Patients are commonly admitted for a multitude of different medical diagnosis ranging from infections, COPD, pneumonia, sepsis, gastrointestinal complications, substance abuse withdrawal, diabetic complications and more.. N3S Medical Unit- 32 bed general medical unit, specializing in adult complex conditions with a main focus on respiratory diseases. Our nurses work closely with the physician, care manager, social worker, and PT/OT to ensure we deliver high quality/safe care to our patients. C3 Medical Unit - 27 bed unit. Common diagnoses include sepsis, cellulitis, gastrointestinal bleed, pneumonia, diabetic complications, and medical management pre- and post- liver transplant. C3’s care team includes close collaboration with physicians, social workers, case management, and pharmacists to provide comprehensive care. Our care standards include bedside shift report, meaningful hourly rounding, and interdisciplinary care team rounds. #READ
