About The Position

This position is located at Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center, Dir of Nursing Mixed Med/Surg Unit with Peds, Fort Hood, Killeen, TX. Fort Hood is a United States Army post located in the beautiful 'hill and lake' country of Central Texas between Killeen and Copperas Cove and is approximately 60 miles north of the capital city of Austin, 50 miles south of Waco, 160 miles south of Dallas, and 150 miles north of San Antonio. The post is located halfway between Austin and Waco, about 60 mi from each, within the U.S. state of Texas. The post is the headquarters of III Armored Corps and First Army Division West and is home to the 1st Cavalry Division and 3rd Cavalry Regiment, among others. Its origin was the need for wide-open space to test and train with World War II tank destroyers. The War Department announced the location in January 1942, and the initial completion was set for that August. As originally constructed, Fort Hood had an area of 158,706 acres, with billeting for 6,007 officers and 82,610 enlisted personnel. Requirements

  • US Citizens
  • A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.).
  • A current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States; and you must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination.
  • For individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required.
  • Exemption for current federal employees: If you are a current federal employee occupying a position in the 0610 occupational series and have been continuously employed in this occupational series since September 27, 2017 or before, you are exempt from the basic requirements above. You must meet the requirement below and provide appropriate documentation.
  • Degree or diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant.
  • Active, current registration as a professional nurse in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
  • A diploma, associate degree, or bachelor's degree in Nursing from a professional nursing program and possession of at least one full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-9 grade level or above) which includes providing comprehensive nursing care to patients with complex and multifaceted medical and surgical needs, administering medications via various routes, and assisting with developing patient care plans for high risk patients.   • OR Education: A PhD or equivalent doctoral degree from a professional nursing educational program or related medical science field.
  • Exemption for current federal employees: If you are a current federal employee occupying a position in the 0610 occupational series and have been continuously employed in this occupational series since September 27, 2017 or before, you are exempt from the qualification requirements above. You must meet one of the requirement below and provide appropriate documentation.
  • Completion of all requirements for a doctoral degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) from a professional nursing program OR 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education from a professional nursing program
  • If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university. Responsibilities

  • Provide an advanced level of specialized nursing care to medical-surgical patients, ranging from neonates to the elderly.
  • Provide direct care and education to patients and families.
  • Provide input for decisions related to policy, procedures, and practices relevant to patient care.
  • Utilize the nursing process to initiate assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care of patients.
  • Assist in the development of patient care plans.
  • Coordinate the care of complex medical-surgical patients.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
