About The Position

The Psychiatric Liaison Nurse (PLN) exercises independence in the provision of individualized assessment and care to patients in the ER with mental health and/or substance misuse challenges. The PLN works closely with physicians, psychiatrists, Community MHAS, and other Health Authority and community stakeholders to develop and deliver high-quality services for persons presenting to Emergency with mental health and addiction concerns. The incumbent provides patient and family education/support while the patient is in the emergency department and acts as a role model/clinical resource for management of psychiatric, intoxicated, and aggressive patients. The PLN will be responsible for caregiver policy and procedures development. The incumbent is responsible to lead others through the development of a long-term vision for this position. This involves the research, development, coordination, and evaluation of an integrated program. This PLN is expected to work as a part of the emergency service team.

Requirements

  • Three years full-time experience in Acute Psychiatric or Community MH Nursing
  • Bachelor of Psychiatric Nursing (BPN)
  • Basic CPR
  • Psychiatric Nursing diploma is acceptable
  • Bachelor of Nursing is acceptable
  • Nursing diploma is acceptable
  • Basic - Computer skills
  • Basic - Keyboarding skills
  • Advanced - Interpersonal skills
  • Ability to plan/organize/coordinate with other multidisciplinary team members
  • Ability to make decisions
  • Ability to adapt to changing conditions
  • Knowledge in human behaviour, growth and development
  • Knowledge in Mental Health nursing processes and appropriate interventions
  • Ability to promote effective relationships within the SHA and the community.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Ability to develop, evaluate and modify programming provided to clients
  • Ability to use a variety of assessment procedures and interviewing skills
  • Ability to critically think in accordance per policies/procedures of SHA/MHAS/ED
  • Demonstrate an understanding of Health Promotion/Prevention initiatives in MHAS
  • Knowledge in mental health/mental illness impact on client, family and community
  • Ability to work collaboratively with team members and the community at large.
  • Knowledge in local human service organizations, resources, referral procedures
  • Ability to make decisions in accordance with policies/procedures of SHA/MHAS/ED
  • Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate with community agencies
  • Current knowledge of medical and psychosocial interventions
  • Understands Mental Health Services Act, forms, policies & procedures of SHA/MHAS
  • Ability to establish/maintain satisfactory working relationships
  • Knowledge in critical thinking processes
  • Knowledge of the the Provincial Mental Health Services Act and Regulations
  • Knowledge in applicable health promotion and health prevention initiatives
  • Ability to build and maintain effective relationships/partnerships
  • Ability to be resourceful
  • Knowledge of mental health and mental illness issues in a variety of settings
  • Knowledge and practical application of the Mental Health Services Act
  • Registered/eligible with the College of Registered Nurses of Saskatchewan (CRNS)
  • Registered/eligible with College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of SK - CRPNS
