The Public Health Nurse, working under the direction of the Manager of Public Health Nursing, is an integral member of the Public Health Services team. This role provides nursing services within the framework of the Population Health Promotion Model and requires a significant degree of independence. The nurse is expected to make primary decisions based on sound assessments in accordance with the Public Health Act, the policies of the Public Health Nursing program, the SRNA Standards of Practice, the Canadian Community Health Nursing Standards of Practice, the Public Health Nursing Discipline Specific Competencies, and other relevant legislation. This role requires knowledge, skills, and abilities specific to health promotion, primary and secondary prevention strategies, and protection. The Public Health Nurse translates knowledge from the health and social sciences to support health programs and advocacy, and liaises with, and refers to, other health personnel, as well as other sectors and community groups.
