About The Position

This position involves assisting in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of public health program activities, drawing upon determinants of health, best practice literature, and community assessments. The role includes providing health information, consultation, emotional support, and referrals through various channels such as telephone and one-on-one contacts in clinical, school, home, and community settings. Key duties also encompass reviewing, developing, and evaluating educational materials, contributing to public health communication through articles, displays, and media appearances, and conducting educational programs for diverse population groups. A significant aspect is providing parenting education and support to foster healthy families, implementing strategies for communicable disease reduction, including immunization, and screening infants and preschool children for developmental delays. Furthermore, the Public Health Nurse provides observational experiences and acts as a preceptor for nursing, medical, and nutrition students, while meticulously maintaining client records, statistics, and workload measurement tools.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN)
  • Basic Life Support Certificate (BLS)
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Ability to communicate with clients from diverse cultural backgrounds
  • Ability to communicate with clients from diverse social backgrounds
  • Ability to communicate with clients from diverse economic backgrounds
  • Registered/eligible with the College of Registered Nurses of Saskatchewan (CRNS)

Responsibilities

  • Assists in planning, implementation, and evaluation of program activities based on determinants of health, best practice literature, and community assessment.
  • Provides health information, consultation, emotional support, and referral via telephone and in one-on-one contacts (clinical, school, home, and community setting).
  • Reviews, develops, and evaluates educational materials.
  • Assists in writing articles, preparing bulletin board displays, and appearing in television interviews.
  • Conducts educational programs for selected population groups in a variety of settings.
  • Provides parenting education and support programs to foster healthy functioning families.
  • Uses strategies to reduce communicable disease including immunization.
  • Screens infants and preschool children for specific delays and deficiencies related to growth and development.
  • Provides observational experiences for nursing, medical, and nutrition students.
  • Precepts nursing students.
  • Maintains accurate client records, statistics, and workload measurement tools.
